A new dark comedy series starring a lead actor from The Big Bang Theory has become the biggest threat to AMC’s most popular show.
Since The Big Bang Theory concluded, its actors have taken on diverse roles. Kaley Cuoco has appeared in three mystery thriller series: The Flight Attendant on HBO, Based on a True Story on Peacock, and Vanished on MGM+. Kunal Nayyar starred in the Netflix sci-fi drama Spaceman, while Mayim Bialik served as a guest host on Jeopardy! for two years, from 2021 to 2023.
Simon Helberg, known for his role in The Big Bang Theory, stars in The Audacity, which is currently the most popular show on AMC+ in the United States. It’s taken the number one spot from Dark Winds, which had been a top 10 hit for 57 days straight. Other shows and movies currently ranking lower in the U.S. top 10 include This City Is Ours, Mystery Road: Origin, The Mortuary Assistant, Original Gangsters with Sean Bean, I Am Number Four, The Plague, Gangs of London, and National Treasure: Book of Secrets.
Simon Helberg, known for playing Howard Wolowitz on The Big Bang Theory, stars as Martin Phister in The Audacity. Martin is a brilliant man who dedicates himself to creating an AI helper for teens, but struggles to connect with his own teenage daughter, Tess (Thailey Roberge). The show satirizes the lives of several families in Silicon Valley, including Martin, his wife Anushka (Meagan Rath), and Tess.
In a review for ScreenRant, Nick Bythrow awarded the show 7 out of 10 stars, highlighting its strong characters and a plot that moves forward based on their choices. He calls it a funny and sharp critique that isn’t afraid to take risks. Bythrow, noting that the series was created by a writer from Succession, also favorably compares it to the HBO drama, pointing out that both shows portray powerful people who are often clueless and primarily motivated by self-interest.
According to a review by ScreenRant, the series starts a little slowly in terms of focusing on its main characters, Martin and Anushka. The first episode spends more time developing the stories of other characters, like CEO Duncan Park and his therapist, JoAnne Felder. However, with AMC already greenlighting a second season, it’s clear the show is building a foundation and setting up storylines that will unfold over time.
The main group of characters includes Duncan, JoAnne, Martin, Anushka, and Tess, along with their families and friends. This includes Duncan’s wife, Lili Park-Hoffsteader, and their daughter Jamison, as well as JoAnne’s son Orson and her husband, Dr. Gary Felder. Also part of the group are Iraq war veteran Tom Ruffage and Carl Bardolph, a tech mogul who is one of JoAnne’s patients. Notably, this project brings Zach Galifianakis and Kurt Magnussen together again, as they previously co-starred as Jumba and Pleakley in Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch.
Although it probably won’t last as long as The Big Bang Theory‘s 12 seasons, the new show The Audacity is getting off to a great start. It’s already been renewed for a second season, is performing well on AMC+, and has a 75% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This is another long-running series for actor Simon Helberg, following his success with The Big Bang Theory and his two-season run on Peacock’s Poker Face.
