As the United States nears its 250th anniversary, historical discussions are everywhere. These range from enthusiastic, patriotic events to thoughtful examinations of the past. One president often compared to those leading today is Ronald Reagan. He’s been both praised and criticized. Reagan’s journey to the White House was unusual: he started as a Hollywood actor, then led the actors’ union during a period of anti-communist fear, served as governor of California, and finally became president.
Ronald Reagan’s life has been depicted on screen several times. Richard Crenna gave a notable performance in the 2001 film The Day Reagan Was Shot, which focused on the immediate aftermath of the 1981 assassination attempt. Josh Brolin portrayed Reagan in the 2003 TV movie The Reagans, and Dennis Quaid played him in the 2020 film Reagan, which covered his entire presidency. Now, Jeff Daniels takes on the role in the new film Brink of War, produced by Angel Studios, SK Global, and 2521 Entertainment, scheduled for release on August 14th.
In the film, actor Daniels convincingly portrays Ronald Reagan during the 1986 Reykjavík Summit, a crucial meeting with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in Iceland. This meeting ultimately led to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty between the US and the Soviet Union. The film Brink of War feels particularly relevant today, given ongoing tensions with Russia and the recent conflict with Iran, which raises questions about the true motivations behind such confrontations – are they about preventing nuclear proliferation, promoting democracy, benefiting the military industry, securing oil resources, or something else entirely?
The cast of Brink of War features Jared Harris as Gorbachev, Hope Davis as Nancy Reagan, and J.K. Simmons as Secretary of State George Shultz. A new trailer for the film was shown yesterday at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, alongside trailers for Young Washington and Runner – all produced by Angel Studios. CinemaCon is a major event for movie theater owners and distributors where upcoming films are previewed and industry trends are discussed. During the event, Sony executive Tom Rothman encouraged theaters to reduce the length of pre-movie trailers.
As a huge movie fan, I’ve been really interested in Angel Studios lately – they’ve clearly figured something out with films like Sound of Freedom. Though, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. There was a lot of talk about how they sold tickets, with this ‘pay-it-forward’ system where people bought tons of tickets to give away. It boosted sales by about $26 million and two million tickets, but some people felt it was a way to artificially inflate the film’s popularity. And despite some criticism linking the movie to QAnon, director Tim Ballard was able to clearly explain his vision for the film, which helped distance it from those political groups trying to label it.
Angel Studios’ new film, Brink of War, ventures into politically charged territory, but features a cast with diverse viewpoints. It’s encouraging that the studio, known for its strong values, seems to be aiming for a compelling thriller that transcends current divides and offers a thought-provoking message. The film marks the feature directorial debut of Michael Russell Gunn, who has previously written and produced for acclaimed shows like Billions, Designated Survivor, Black Sails, and The Newsroom. Hopefully, Brink of War will stimulate important discussions about leadership, the realities of war, nuclear weapons, and the importance of political compromise.
