Apple TV’s Sci-Fi Romance ‘The Gorge’ Starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Miles Teller

Apple TV, backed by the financial power of Apple (the company that makes iPhones), has always had significant resources. A loss of $100 million on a film like Argylle is relatively minor for a company of Apple’s size. Even when it first launched as Apple TV+, the service was able to attract major stars like Brad Pitt and Martin Scorsese, offering them deals they couldn’t refuse to create content for the platform.

Apple has a knack for attracting major stars to its films. Joaquin Phoenix plays Napoleon, Denzel Washington went head-to-head with A$AP Rocky in a rap battle, and Julianne Moore and Sydney Sweeney are playing mother and daughter in a gripping thriller. Their latest release, the dark comedy Outcome, boasts a huge cast including Keanu Reeves, Cameron Diaz, Matt Bomer, Laverne Cox, Drew Barrymore, and Jonah Hill. It’s become clear that Apple TV+ movies consistently feature incredibly talented and well-known actors.

I was really surprised when Scott Derrickson, after making The Black Phone, directed The Gorge for Apple TV! It’s a wild mix of romance, sci-fi, action, and horror. Critics were a little divided, but it was a huge success on Apple TV+, and honestly, I think having stars like Rooster, Princess Peach, and Ellen Ripley all together in one film definitely helped draw people in – it was a fun cast!

The Gorge Paired Up Anya Taylor-Joy & Miles Teller

In the film The Gorge, Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller play highly skilled snipers assigned a bizarre mission: they must each watch one side of a massive, deep ravine for an entire year, completely cut off from the outside world, with no explanation as to why or what the gorge contains. It’s a unique and unusual idea, reminiscent of an episode from The Twilight Zone, and director Derrickson skillfully plays with the mysteries surrounding the gorge itself.

At its heart, the movie is a love story between two snipers. The dangerous setting simply provides a year-long opportunity for them to connect and fall in love. While reviews were mixed overall, critics generally praised the strong chemistry between Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller, feeling it was enough to hold the movie together. Many felt the romance worked well, but the action and thriller elements sometimes distracted from it. Though the ending is somewhat predictable, the actors’ connection makes the film engaging throughout.

Sigourney Weaver Steals The Show

Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller are big stars, but Sigourney Weaver truly elevates The Gorge, returning to the world of science fiction action horror. Weaver is iconic for her role in the Alien films – she’s a legend in the genre – so her presence in the cast is a real treat, similar to having John Wayne in a Western. She plays Bartholomew, a secretive character who hires two snipers to guard the gorge.

Most reviewers felt that The Gorge loses its way towards the end, shifting from an intriguing sci-fi romance to a typical action movie. However, Sigourney Weaver’s performance elevates the final act, particularly when the true intentions of her character are revealed. Weaver is well-known as an action star, and it’s enjoyable to see her play a villain, like she did in the comedy Paul with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller both deliver strong performances, but Sigourney Weaver truly shines whenever she’s on screen. While there’s been a lot of buzz about films like F1, Wolfs, and Killers of the Flower Moon, The Gorge is also a film that deserves recognition.
