Even when it first launched as Apple TV+, the service was able to attract major stars like Brad Pitt and Martin Scorsese, offering them deals they couldn’t refuse to create content for the platform.

I was really surprised when Scott Derrickson, after making The Black Phone, directed The Gorge for Apple TV! It’s a wild mix of romance, sci-fi, action, and horror. Critics were a little divided, but it was a huge success on Apple TV+, and honestly, I think having stars like Rooster, Princess Peach, and Ellen Ripley all together in one film definitely helped draw people in – it was a fun cast!

At its heart, the movie is a love story between two snipers. The dangerous setting simply provides a year-long opportunity for them to connect and fall in love. While reviews were mixed overall, critics generally praised the strong chemistry between Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller, feeling it was enough to hold the movie together. She plays Bartholomew, a secretive character who hires two snipers to guard the gorge.

Most reviewers felt that The Gorge loses its way towards the end, shifting from an intriguing sci-fi romance to a typical action movie. However, Sigourney Weaver’s performance elevates the final act, particularly when the true intentions of her character are revealed. Weaver is well-known as an action star, and it’s enjoyable to see her play a villain, like she did in the comedy Paul with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller both deliver strong performances, but Sigourney Weaver truly shines whenever she’s on screen. While there’s been a lot of buzz about films like F1, Wolfs, and Killers of the Flower Moon, The Gorge is also a film that deserves recognition.
