WBD Taps Ex-Netflix Exec Shauna Spenley as Streaming CMO; Patrizio ‘Pato’ Spagnoletto to Exit

As a fervent admirer of the dynamic world of streaming entertainment, I can’t help but be thrilled about the recent appointment of Shauna Spenley at Warner Bros. Discovery. Her rich background, spanning 15 years at Netflix and her more recent stint at Riot Games, speaks volumes about her expertise in the field.

Shauna Spenley, who has spent years working in marketing at Netflix, is now moving to Warner Bros. Discovery and will serve as the Global Chief Marketing Officer for their Direct-to-Consumer division.

Starting September 3rd, Patrizio “Pato” Spagnoletto’s role at Warner Bros. Discovery will be taken over by someone new, as Pato has chosen to leave the company. However, he will continue working with them until fall to help with the transition process. The newcomer, Spenley, will report directly to JB Perrette, who serves as CEO and president of global streaming and games at Warner Bros. Discovery, as announced on Tuesday.

Spenley moves to WBD from her position as the global president of entertainment at Riot Games. At Riot, she spearheaded their ventures into film, TV, music, and managed their intellectual property strategy and consumer products teams. Prior to joining Riot in 2021, she held several high-ranking marketing and publicity roles within Netflix for a period of 15 years.

As a new appointee at Warner Bros. Discovery, I find myself tasked with spearheading the global marketing team charged with bolstering our streaming services’ subscriber base. This encompasses not only Max and Discovery+ but also involves a wide range of duties such as branding, content promotion, retaining existing subscribers, enhancing user engagement, and delving into marketing analytics, research, and media strategies. I will collaborate closely with our domestic networks and international counterparts to ensure seamless integration in our efforts for success.

“Spenley has been a dedicated subscriber and admirer of Max ever since its debut,” he stated in a statement released by Warner Bros. Discovery. “The diverse range of content it offers sets it apart in the industry, with HBO – the most renowned TV brand – being just one example. I’m eagerly looking forward to diving in and collaborating with JB, Casey [Bloys, head of HBO and Max content], and their marketing team.”

Previously serving as Executive Vice President and head of marketing at Hulu, Spagnoletto subsequently joined Discovery Inc. in early 2021, assuming the role of Global Chief Marketing Officer for their direct-to-consumer business. Following Discovery’s acquisition of WarnerMedia, he took on the position of CMO for Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming group. In a statement, Spagnoletto expressed his gratitude towards WBD for the opportunity and pride in the momentum they built around Max. Although this is just the start of Max’s journey, he believes it’s an opportune time for transition, confident that Shauna and her outstanding team will lead Max to become a premier global destination for entertainment.

Speaking about the appointment of Shauna Spenley, Perrette expressed, “We’re incredibly lucky to welcome someone as skilled as Shauna onto our team at One WBD. Her decision to join us speaks volumes about our successes, resources, and the exciting future we have ahead. Furthermore, I want to acknowledge her countless accomplishments she’s made at Warner Bros. Discovery, as well as at Discovery before that.”
