Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power Season 2's Daniel Weyman Teases a Hard Journey for The Stranger

As a seasoned gamer and Tolkien enthusiast with a soft spot for epic journeys, I must admit, I was intrigued by the enigmatic character of The Stranger in Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The suspense surrounding his identity was tantalizingly reminiscent of a high-stakes RPG quest, where every clue unveiled feels like a hard-earned level-up.

Initially, the entire first season of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was veiled in secrecy, and nothing about the series was clearer than the character of Daniel Weyman, known as The Stranger. It wasn’t until the eve of the show’s debut that the plot unfolded, leaving many questions about The Stranger unanswered. Initially, there were suspicions that he might be a new form of Sauron, but it was later revealed that Sauron disguised himself as Hallbrand (Charlie Vickers). However, what remained a mystery until later episodes was the true identity of The Stranger, who turned out to be an “Istar,” or in simpler terms, a wizard, as the Harfoots refer to them colloquially.

In Lord of the Rings lore, The Stranger’s identity becomes more clear, as he seems to be on the path to becoming the Gandalf we’re familiar with. Despite this, the character remains unnamed in Season 2, embarking on a journey to discover himself alongside Nori (Markella Kavenagh). At a recent press event, actor Weyman hinted that The Stranger begins the season in a favorable position and is eager to learn more about himself. However, trouble from traveling soon becomes apparent.

Weyman shared that the prospect of embarking on an adventure with trusted, cared-for companions filled him with anticipation, much like a young person’s excitement about the unknown. He suspected The Stranger might not have known what lay ahead, but his eagerness to explore this new territory and self-discovery was palpable. However, things soon took a drastic turn for the worse, marking a harsh awakening for The Stranger. He would need to reevaluate himself, comprehend why things went wrong, and find ways to make amends in the future. The initial phase was filled with wide-eyed curiosity.

In Season 2, Weyman didn’t disclose much detail regarding The Stranger’s travel itinerary, but he hinted that the character won’t only engage with Nori and the Harfoots; additional encounters are anticipated in future episodes.

As a fan, I can’t help but hint at uncharted territories yet to grace our screens, places never before captured in film or television. In this fresh exploration, we have the chance to breathe life into landscapes that have remained untouched, and who knows, we might even run into familiar faces like Tom Bombadil – a character not depicted in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings saga. Excitement builds as we anticipate encounters with various new creatures and adventures await us around every corner.

Weyman finds it fascinating to consider expanding The Stranger’s world, but he is aware that the creative team prefers to stay within the boundaries of the Tolkien universe they are working in. In simpler terms, he wonders if there could be any overlap with other worlds and it’s all about finding a balance between maintaining the established lore.

In other words, it remains to be seen what self-discoveries await The Stranger as the second season of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power debuts on Amazon Prime Video this coming Thursday, August 29.
