Disney+ has launched the first four episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, a new animated series that puts the iconic character Maul front and center. This is the first major series to focus on Maul as the main character.
Although no new Star Wars games are launching with the show, it’s reminded many fans of Darth Maul’s past appearances in video games, especially considering his close connection to both the character and voice actor Sam Witwer’s history with gaming.
To mark the release of the first four episodes of Shadow Lord, we’ve compiled a list of the 10 greatest video games featuring Darth Maul, regardless of whether they fit into the current Star Wars storyline.
Since first appearing in the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul has been featured in more than 20 different video games.
10. Fortnite
Dancing to the Dark Side
Even though Darth Maul is known as a powerful and menacing villain, his roles in video games often lean towards humor, like his recent appearance in Fortnite.
Maul was first added to Fortnite in 2023 as part of Chapter 4, Season 2. This season featured several characters and items from Star Wars, both in the Battle Royale game and available for purchase as cosmetics.
Players could get Darth Maul’s classic Sith apprentice outfit in Fortnite by buying it from the shop or earning it through Galactic Reputation in LEGO Fortnite Odyssey. He also appeared as a holographic character in Battle Royale, letting players briefly use the Sith Apprentice Lightsaber.
9. LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game
The Most Menacing Minifigure
Gamers who fondly remember the early 2000s often recall Darth Maul being particularly menacing in LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game – even though he didn’t say a single word and was made of LEGOs.
Traveller’s Tales’ very first LEGO game was LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game. It playfully retold the story of the Star Wars prequel trilogy using LEGOs and lots of silly, physical comedy. Darth Maul only appeared at the very end of the game, in the final level based on Episode I, Chapter 6.
Even though it was his first time as a playable character in a video game, Darth Maul was a formidable opponent. He used the Force to hurl objects like explosives, lifts, and even bikes at players, and memorably killed Qui-Gon Jinn before dramatically falling to Obi-Wan Kenobi’s lightsaber – all while delivering a chilling yell.
8. Star Wars: Racer Revenge
A Secret, Shocking Racer
Darth Maul usually appears in video games as he did in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, but developers often add a creative spin. A good example of this is Star Wars: Racer Revenge from 2002.
The game Racer Revenge takes place eight years after The Phantom Menace. It features a renewed rivalry between Anakin Skywalker and Sebulba as they compete in a galactic podracing tournament for the championship title.
Darth Maul isn’t a standard character in Racer Revenge‘s story mode, but you can unlock him as a playable racer. To do so, you need to achieve the highest number of knockouts on every track, which will then grant you access to his unique, fully upgraded podracer modeled after his Scimitar.
7. Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles
Maul’s First Great Boss Fight
If you’re looking for a Star Wars game focused specifically on The Phantom Menace, Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles is a great choice. It’s an action game you can play with a friend, and Darth Maul is a recurring character.
Darth Maul serves as the primary antagonist in Jedi Power Battles. He initially appears in a quick battle on Tatooine before Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, and the Naboo characters depart for Coruscant. He then returns for a longer, more challenging boss fight involving platforming elements within the Naboo’s Plasma Refinery Complex.
It’s even more enjoyable to play as Maul in Jedi Power Battles because once you finish the game as Qui-Gon, Maul becomes unlocked. This lets you experience the events of The Phantom Menace from his perspective, battling droids, Tusken Raiders, and other enemies.
6. Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005)
An Overpowered Villain
The original Star Wars: Battlefront II from Pandemic Studios, released in 2005, is a true classic. It’s considered one of the best games of its time, not just within the Star Wars franchise, and Darth Maul, though not a central character, contributed to what made it so special.
The campaign in Battlefront II takes place during the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War, meaning Darth Maul isn’t part of that story. However, players can control him in multiplayer battles – both against other players and alongside teammates – on maps like Coruscant, Mustafar, Naboo, Polis Massa, Rhen Var, Tatooine, and Yavin IV, where he fights for the Confederacy of Independent Systems.
Maul is a remarkably powerful character in the game. He’s incredibly dangerous with his unique double-bladed lightsaber, and his Saber Throw and Force Push attacks let him swiftly defeat large groups of enemies, including both Clone Troopers and vehicles.
5. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
Sam Witwer’s Version of The Phantom Menace
Sam Witwer has been the main voice of Darth Maul since he first portrayed the character in the 2008 animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars. However, he didn’t get to perform the role of Maul from The Phantom Menace until the release of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
Darth Maul shows up in more scenes in this game compared to the first LEGO Star Wars, but he’s still mainly a boss you fight near the end of the Phantom Menace levels. This time, the fight continues until only his head is left, which is then tossed into a pit… through a basketball hoop!
Sam Witwer’s performance as Darth Maul really shines in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Players who choose to play as Maul get to experience unique interactions with the game’s open world, like hearing him vow to fully commit to his plans, or even receiving praise from General Grievous for his skill with a lightsaber.
4. Star Wars Battlefront II (2017)
The Return of an Old Master
When DICE revived the Star Wars Battlefront series in 2015, some fans were disappointed that it only featured characters and locations from the first three Star Wars films. The 2017 release, Star Wars Battlefront II, addressed this by adding content from both the sequel trilogy and the prequel trilogy, with Darth Maul as a prominent figure representing the prequels.
Witwer once again voices Darth Maul, and now players can use him on any map as a villain. This lets the fiery Zabrak battle Clone Troopers, Rebels, and Resistance fighters on the ground. In space, Maul pilots his ship, the Scimitar, to take on enemy starfighters.
As a huge Maul fan, one of the coolest things about playing him in Battlefront II is definitely unlocking his cyborg look from Star Wars Rebels. It’s awesome to see that version of him in the game! And the best part? There’s an emote where he screams ‘Kenobi!’ just like in season three of Rebels – it’s a perfect little touch that really makes playing as him so much fun.
3. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3
A Skater Unlike Any Other
The early 2000s were a time of creative risk-taking in video games, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 is a great example of this. Even though it was a skateboarding game, it included surprise appearances from characters from other franchises, like Doom Guy from Doom and Wolverine from Marvel Comics.

Darth Maul is one of the strangest and most enjoyable unlockable skaters in Pro Skater 3. You can add him to your roster by either completing all 54 goals and earning all gold medals in Career mode while playing as Tony Hawk, or by using the cheat codes “FREAKSHOW” or “YOHOMIES”.
Licensing problems prevented Darth Maul from appearing in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4. However, players can still skate as him in the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3, complete with his lightsaber, grinding rails and pulling off aerial tricks – just as intended by Darth Sidious.
2. Disney Infinity 3.0
The Shadow Collective’s Most Surprising Plot
Surprisingly, Darth Maul was particularly well-implemented in the Disney Infinity 3.0 video game. This game allowed players to use toys of Star Wars characters from all nine movies within the Disney Infinity universe.
You can start playing as Darth Maul right away if you have his digital in-game figure. However, he really shines in the ‘Twilight of the Republic’ campaign, which takes place during the Clone Wars. This campaign follows Obi-Wan, Anakin, Ahsoka Tano, and Yoda as they investigate a strange reactivation of a droid factory on the planet Geonosis.
The droid factory wasn’t started by the Separatists, but by Maul and his Shadow Collective, including a powerful group of Mandalorian warriors. Sam Witwer reprises his role as Maul, who intends to use these droids to wipe out the key leaders of both the Republic and the Separatists.
1. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
The Beginning of Sam Witwer’s Star Wars Career
Although it was great to see Maul’s Shadow Collective included in Disney Infinity, Darth Maul’s best video game portrayal remains, undeniably, in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.
In the first game where Matt Witwer played the main character, Starkiller—Darth Vader’s hidden apprentice—Darth Maul appears briefly, but his appearance is a huge and memorable surprise.
Near the climax of the game, on the planet Raxus Prime which is under Imperial control, Starkiller’s droid, PROXY, activates a hidden component originally from Darth Maul. This allows PROXY to fulfill its main goal: to destroy Starkiller, leading to a challenging and memorable boss battle featuring two characters brilliantly portrayed by actor Sam Witwer.
