The Rookie Is Slowly Killing Itself & Season 8’s Worst Episode Proves That

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for the season 8, episode 15 finale of The Rookie, titled “Survive the Streets.” The Rookie has proven to be a successful show for ABC, but some feel recent storylines are harming its quality. Created by Alexi Hawley, the series is now the network’s third-longest-running show, demonstrating its continued popularity despite changes in the television landscape. While it doesn’t always achieve top ratings immediately after airing, The Rookie thrives thanks to its availability on streaming services and its popularity on social media, which is attracting a younger audience.

When The Rookie first aired in 2018, it stood out from typical police dramas like NCIS and Law & Order: SVU because it wasn’t focused on a single, standard team. Over the past decade, the show has expanded its storytelling beyond its main character, John Nolan (played by Nathan Fillion), giving other characters engaging storylines that connect to the weekly cases. However, the direction of season 8 suggests the series is losing its momentum and quality.

The Rookie Season 8, Episode 15 Is An Amalgamation Of Everything Killing The Show

In its fifth season, The Rookie is trying the documentary-style episode again with “Survive the Streets.” This format has always been a point of contention with viewers, and the show seems to be doubling down on elements that have caused problems in the past. These episodes consistently receive lower ratings than typical episodes, yet ABC continues to use this approach with The Rookie.

It’s disappointing that Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford weren’t paired up on this outing, especially considering their history. This highlights a larger issue with The Rookie – the show seems to be neglecting some of the pairings fans really enjoy.

Additionally, the episode “Survive the Streets” points out a continuing problem with season 8 of The Rookie – Miles Penn doesn’t get enough attention. Nathan Fillion is, and will remain, the show’s main star, but his increased rank means he’s no longer the best character to follow as the story unfolds. Celina briefly filled that role, and her early scenes with Nolan helped build her character effectively.

Miles hasn’t received the same attention as other characters, and he was even absent from some episodes of The Rookie‘s eighth season. Because he represents a new wave of talent, ABC needs to invest in developing his character to ensure the show’s continued success.

How ABC Can Stop The Rookie From Slowly Dying

It took a bit longer than usual, but ABC has officially renewed The Rookie for the 2026-2027 season, which is great news! The show’s creators, Hawley and his team, need to address some ongoing concerns before they become bigger problems. Fans have consistently shared their dislike of the documentary-style episodes, and that’s reflected in their lower ratings on IMDb. While it’s good the show is trying new things, hopefully they can refine these episodes to make them work better for viewers.

It’s really important for The Rookie to give Miles a strong storyline. While he’s the newest member of the team and the show has understandably focused on its established characters for a while, building up Miles is crucial for the show’s long-term success. Shows often change their casts, and it’s smart for The Rookie to expand its stories now, so it can continue even if characters eventually leave.
