Sony is officially heading back into the world of video game adaptations with an R-rated twist.
At CinemaCon on Monday, Sony Pictures revealed plans to adapt one of PlayStation’s most popular games into an R-rated animated movie. The film is being made by PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation, and popular content creator Seán “Jacksepticeye” McLoughlin is also producing.
Although the story is still a secret, the new game gives a sense of the overall atmosphere. The original Bloodborne featured a solitary wanderer exploring a spooky, gothic city filled with monstrous creatures. The game became popular for being incredibly challenging and having a rich, complex backstory, and fans are still trying to unravel its secrets years later.
The game’s strong reputation is a major reason people are already excited about the upcoming adaptation. Widely considered a classic, Bloodborne – created by FromSoftware and published by Sony – features a uniquely immersive world that lends itself well to animation, especially for bringing its terrifying aspects to a wider audience. The choice to make it R-rated shows Sony is committed to faithfully recreating the game’s intense and violent atmosphere.
