ESPN Elevates Mike McQuade, David Roberts in Content Overhaul

As a seasoned ESPN veteran of 37 years, I am thrilled to see the strategic changes being implemented within our content division. The restructuring and realignment of roles is long overdue, and it’s heartening to see Burke Magnus taking decisive action based on the collective wisdom of internal discussions.

ESPN is planning to share responsibility for several of its popular studio shows between two different programming leaders, while reorganizing its content division’s structure. This overhaul includes creating a new position for an executive who will manage production for the Super Bowl, which ESPN has the rights to broadcast in 2027 under their latest NFL contract.

Historically, the management of these programs has been distributed among various executives. However, during recent internal discussions, there was a strong suggestion that studio, production, and editorial roles could be more harmoniously coordinated to enhance effectiveness and creativity. Burke Magnus, president of content, made this point in a memo released on Monday. The changes may result in a limited number of job redundancies, although the exact number of employees affected was not disclosed by him.

Mike McQuade, a seasoned ESPN professional with 37 years under his belt, has been appointed as the Executive Vice President of Sports Production. In this role, he will be responsible for managing studio programs that focus on individual sports such as those related to the NFL and NBA, in addition to overseeing production during all game broadcasts. Simultaneously, David Roberts has been named Executive Vice President of Sports News and Entertainment, tasked with supervising shows with a wider scope, including “First Take,” “Sports Center,” and “Get Up.” Prior to this appointment, McQuade was in charge of coverage for tennis, hockey, boxing, golf, and the late-night “Sports Center” hosted by Scott Van Pelt.

“Magnus mentioned that since May, we’ve been developing a strategy aimed at revamping our department. The goal is to enhance teamwork, streamline duties, achieve better alignment, and reallocate resources towards expanding sectors. This way, our staff will be well-equipped to meet ESPN’s objectives in times of rapid change,” (paraphrased statement).

Since Magnus was appointed president of content in March 2023, some significant changes have been implemented – changes that are among the most extensive since then. These moves also mark a shift in accountability for some of ESPN’s most crucial assets, following the departure of Norby Williamson in April. Known within ESPN for his authority over studio programming and his preference for sports results rather than broader social issue discussions, Williamson drew public attention after host Pat McAfee criticized him on air.

As a movie reviewer diving into the digital realm, I find myself taking note of Katiee Dailey’s pivotal role as senior vice president for digital, social, and streaming content. Her responsibility extends to overseeing productions tailored for social media platforms and managing ESPN’s significant partnership with Omar Roja – the Instagram guru renowned for his knack in curating captivating sports highlights. This strategic alliance is a crucial move in our industry’s quest to engage younger audiences with compelling sports content.

Freddy Rolón has been appointed to oversee global sports production and ESPN’s talent department. His responsibilities include monitoring the worldwide release of various NBA and WNBA games, which will be accessible via digital platforms such as Disney+.

ESPN is planning to hire a Vice President to manage projects related to the Super Bowl, as they haven’t had the rights to broadcast one of these profitable games in many years. There has been an expectation that ESPN would like to innovate and try new approaches with their broadcasts in order to attract new viewers. Magnus stated, “This newly created Vice President position will allow us to dedicate our full resources and energy towards creating a memorable moment for our company with the Super Bowl.”
