The planned spin-off focusing on Ben Solo, featuring Adam Driver and directed by Steven Soderbergh, has been officially cancelled. News of the project’s cancellation came as a surprise to fans months ago, and despite efforts to revive it, Lucasfilm has confirmed it won’t be moving forward.
Steven Soderbergh has confirmed that a spin-off focusing on Ben Solo is not happening, which will likely disappoint fans who loved the character and felt he was a highlight of the recent Star Wars sequels. However, there’s still potential for another spin-off from that trilogy, and it’s not too late to explore that possibility.
Star Wars Is Ignoring Its Best Sequel Trilogy Spinoff
With the cancellation of The Hunt for Ben Solo, another character from the Sequel Trilogy could really benefit from a continuation of their story: Finn. Played by John Boyega, Finn quickly became a fan favorite and would be perfect for leading his own spin-off film set after the events of the main saga. As a former Stormtrooper who bravely switched sides to fight for the Resistance and help save the galaxy, Finn is a complex and endearing character who deserves to star in his own adventures.
Finn has a lot of potential that future movies could explore. Episode IX hinted at this by revealing he has a secret – later confirmed to be Force sensitivity – and wants to train as a Jedi. It’s frustrating that the film didn’t reveal this secret itself, but it sets up an interesting path for his character.
This creates a great opportunity for Finn’s character development, allowing him to learn about the Force and potentially become a Jedi. Lucasfilm could explore this in a few ways. Rey, currently the only Jedi after the last trilogy, could train Finn as her apprentice, continuing both their storylines. Alternatively, a separate series could follow Finn as he discovers the Force on his own through his adventures. Regardless of the approach, Finn is a compelling character who deserves a deeper exploration of this side of his story.
This is a great chance for Star Wars to address a major issue fans have with the sequel trilogy: the underdevelopment of Finn’s character. Many viewers felt he wasn’t given enough to do in the two sequels after The Force Awakens. Hinting at his connection to the Force and then not exploring it felt like a disservice, and the franchise hasn’t fully recovered. Seven years after The Rise of Skywalker, it’s time to finally give Finn the spotlight and allow him to become the Jedi he was destined to be.
Will Finn Ever Return to Star Wars?
Although Lucasfilm isn’t currently developing a solo series for Finn, fans are still hoping to see the character reappear in future Star Wars stories. While a dedicated spinoff doesn’t seem to be a focus right now, Finn has a good chance of being included in one of the many Star Wars projects that are planned, even if it’s not a standalone adventure set after The Rise of Skywalker.
Lucasfilm revealed in 2023 that they were working on a new Star Wars movie set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Many fans believe the film will center on Rey as she establishes a new generation of Jedi following the defeat of Darth Sidious. This would be an ideal chance to continue Finn’s story—which ended on a frustrating note in Episode IX—by making him the first student at Rey’s Jedi academy. However, the project appears to be on hold and its release is uncertain.
Even though Rey’s movie isn’t happening, Finn still has a good possibility of appearing in a future Star Wars film. This movie will begin a new Star Wars trilogy, and while it will focus on new characters, there’s talk that some actors from the previous trilogy might make cameo appearances. Finn is a popular choice among fans for a return in this upcoming trilogy.
With a new direction for Star Wars and fresh creative minds taking charge, many fans are hoping Finn gets a more meaningful role. His character showed a lot of promise, but the fast-paced plot of the last three films didn’t give him enough to do. Lucasfilm has a chance to finally fulfill the potential hinted at in The Rise of Skywalker and develop Finn into a Jedi.
What’s Next for Star Wars in Lucasfilm’s New Era?
A big change is happening at Lucasfilm, the company behind Star Wars. For the first time since George Lucas sold the franchise, the leadership is shifting. Dave Filoni, known for popular Star Wars shows, and Lynwen Brennan are now in charge, replacing Kathleen Kennedy. While they haven’t shared their future plans yet, the possibilities for the galaxy far, far away are endless.
Dave Filoni is a strong supporter of animation and has created some of the most popular Star Wars animated series, including The Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Bad Batch. Given his track record, he’s expected to push for more animated projects within the franchise. The early success of Maul suggests that Star Wars will likely develop further animated spinoffs soon.
The latest chapter of Star Wars brings the saga back to cinemas after a seven-year gap since The Rise of Skywalker. That long wait ends in May with the release of The Mandalorian and Grogu. While this is the only Star Wars film currently scheduled for release, fans can anticipate more movie announcements soon as the franchise aims to become a major force in theaters again.
Recent Star Wars projects have revisited beloved characters from the past, but the franchise is likely heading towards a new generation of heroes. Upcoming films, like Star Wars: Starfighter, signal a move away from the Skywalker family saga and towards completely new stories and characters. While some fans might be disappointed to see less of characters like Finn, this change offers a much-needed fresh start for Star Wars.
