‘Inside Out 2’ Becomes First Animated Film to Hit $1 Billion at International Box Office

As a lifelong movie enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of animation from humble beginnings to modern masterpieces, I am absolutely thrilled to see “Inside Out 2″ shatter records and join the exclusive $1 billion club. It’s a testament to Pixar’s incredible storytelling and the universal appeal of their characters that this film has resonated with audiences around the globe.

The sequel to “Inside Out” has joined an elite group of movies by earning over $1 billion globally at the box office, making it one of only twelve films and the sole animated feature to achieve this significant financial success.

Although 55 movies worldwide have amassed a total of $1 billion in box office sales (combining domestic and international ticket revenues), only around a dozen films achieved this feat solely from foreign markets. Interestingly, out of these, 11 were live-action productions, with Disney’s 2019 version of “The Lion King” being the standout earner, raking in $1.1 billion internationally. Remarkably, despite its computer-generated imagery, Disney classifies this remake as a live-action film, making “Inside Out 2,” when it is released, the first animated movie to enter the exclusive billion-dollar club.

Reaching the $1 billion mark suggests that “Inside Out 2” has struck a chord across many regions. However, it’s worth noting that Mexico, Brazil, the United Kingdom, France, and South Korea have emerged as its top foreign earners with $102.2 million, $80 million, $72.7 million, $62.6 million, and $60.8 million respectively.

The Pixar sequel from Disney has become the top-earning movie of this year, raking in an impressive $1.649 billion worldwide, with $1.002 billion earned internationally and $646.3 million domestically. Just recently, “Inside Out 2” surpassed “Frozen II” as the highest-grossing animated film ever made in terms of global box office revenue.

Disney has had a successful summer with two blockbuster movies, including “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.” To demonstrate the box office power of “Inside Out 2” among international viewers, “Deadpool & Wolverine” earned approximately half as much – about $634.1 million – in the same markets. It’s worth noting that “Deadpool & Wolverine” is rated R, potentially restricting its audience to those aged 18 and older.

To date, “Deadpool & Wolverine” has earned approximately $1.21 billion globally, making it the 8th highest-grossing film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It surpassed “Captain America: Civil War” ($1.155 billion) and is anticipated to soon outshine “Iron Man 3” ($1.215 billion), potentially securing the 7th position on the list.

Disney’s latest blockbuster, “Alien: Romulus,” earned an additional $41.6 million internationally and $57.8 million globally over the weekend, bringing its total worldwide earnings to $225.4 million. Remarkably, this newest installment in the long-running sci-fi horror series has struck a chord in China, generating $73.3 million there since release.

Globally, the debut of Zoe Kravitz’s psychological thriller “Blink Twice” wasn’t impressive, earning just $6.7 million in 73 international territories. The film also fell short of expectations domestically with a take of $7.2 million, resulting in a global opening of $14 million.

Titled “Blink Twice,” this film, being Kravitz’s first directorial effort, initially boasts a budget of approximately $20 million prior to any reshoots, placing it comfortably within its theatrical release. Channing Tatum, Kravitz’s fiancé, takes on the role of a tech billionaire in this production. He invites a cocktail waitress (played by Naomi Ackie) to his private island for an extravagant party. However, as the evening progresses, events take a dark and ominous turn. In the United States, Amazon MGM is responsible for distribution, while Warner Bros. oversees the global theatrical release in other parts of the world.
