‘Megalopolis’ Trailer’s Fake Critic Quotes Were AI-Generated, Lionsgate Drops Marketing Consultant Responsible For Snafu

As a film enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I must say this incident leaves a bitter taste in my palate. The carelessness displayed by Lionsgate and their consultant Eddie Egan is simply unforgivable. It’s one thing to create a trailer that stirs controversy, but it’s another to manipulate the words of respected film critics to do so.

Lionsgate has decided to terminate its relationship with Eddie Egan, a marketing consultant, due to his creation of the “Megalopolis” trailer containing false reviews attributed to renowned movie critics.

On Wednesday, the studio released the trailer, correcting an error that had been brought to their attention. It seemed the negative comments about Francis Ford Coppola’s past works, which were allegedly from critics’ reviews, were actually fabricated.

According to reliable sources, EbMaster was informed that neither Lionsgate nor Egan intended to misquote critics; instead, it seems there was a lack of thorough verification and fact-checking when obtaining quotes from their consultant. The aim of the trailer was to illustrate that Coppola’s acclaimed work, such as “Megalopolis,” has faced criticism, just like any other masterpiece. It looks like artificial intelligence may have been responsible for generating the fabricated criticisms.

In reality, contrary to what the trailer suggested, Pauline Kael didn’t pan “The Godfather” in The New Yorker as being “diminished by its artsiness.” Instead, she admired the film greatly.

When AI service ChatGPT was asked by EbMaster for critical reviews of Coppola’s work similar to those in the trailer, the feedback it generated closely resembled the actual quotes used.

For over two decades, Egan has collaborated extensively with Adam Fogelson, currently leading the film division at Lionsgate. They previously worked side by side at Universal and later, at STX. Prior to joining Lionsgate, Fogelson held the position of Chairman at Universal Pictures until 2013, then led the film group at STX. He was appointed as Vice Chair of Lionsgate’s film division two years ago, and more recently, he was promoted to Chairman in January.

Egan has been an independent consultant since leaving STX in 2019.

“Lionsgate has decided to pull back the trailer for ‘Megalopolis’ straight away,” the company stated on Wednesday. “We extend our heartfelt apologies to the critics affected and to Francis Ford Coppola and American Zoetrope, as we acknowledge our unforgivable oversight in our quality control process. We made a mistake, and for that, we are truly sorry.”

A representative from Lionsgate chose not to address the given report, while Egan failed to respond to repeated attempts seeking a comment.
