First Orphan in Cronos can prove to be a deadly opponent. To survive the fight you must be cunning

The initial instants within Cronos might take you by surprise, despite any prior survival horror gaming experience. Encountering a new monster could potentially lead to the Traveler’s demise. Here, we offer tips for surviving your first encounter in the corridor and delve into why such an encounter can prove so challenging.

Why can you easily die at the beginning of the game?

In contrast to the encounter with the monster in the film Cronos, the initial face-off in Silent Hill 2 Remake by Bloober Team offers a unique and challenging experience. Unlike James’s initial encounters in Silent Hill which were relatively straightforward and gradually introduced melee combat, the new game may require multiple attempts before you manage to win the first fight.

In the game, the monsters are referred to as “Orphans”. You’ll encounter your first one while you’re searching for two circuit breakers in order to activate the generator, specifically inside the Tailor’s Shop. At some point during this search, the Traveler must descend a level into a corridor where one of the circuit breakers is hidden. Shortly after reaching that location, a monster will burst through the door at the end of the corridor, triggering a battle.

In this initial battle, several challenges are present. Firstly, the fight occurs within a confined, narrow space, which limits maneuverability. Secondly, the opponent moves swiftly, making it hard for The Traveler to keep up. Unfortunately, The Traveler isn’t very agile and is burdened by heavy armor that impedes her speed. Moreover, her basic pistol has limited power but can be enhanced as the game progresses. Regrettably, there is no option within the game to adjust the difficulty level.

How to survive the first fight with the Orphan?

In this scenario, what matters most is maintaining a safe distance from the monster and avoiding close-quarters combat since it’s ineffective. Utilize the stomping mechanic only when the Orphan collapses and you have an opportunity to approach him. Once he starts getting up, swiftly retreat to keep a safe distance until he stabilizes again.

Instead of solely relying on powerful, charge-activated shots, be mindful as the ammo supply in the game is scarce and it’s best to avoid wasting it on normal shots. The only exceptions are swift shots at explosive barrels or canisters, although they aren’t present in the mentioned location. Additionally, we suggest enabling the crosshair within the game settings for easier targeting of enemies.

As a seasoned gamer, I’ve found that the default pistol packs a punch, but it’s not quite enough when dealing with those relentless monsters charging towards me. So here’s my strategy: When the creature gets close, I bide my time, waiting for an opportune moment to slip past it after one of its attacks. Then, I make a mad dash to the far end of the corridor and keep firing away.

Now, here’s a tricky part – the game doesn’t come with a fancy dodge mechanic like rolling or jumping. Instead, when the enemies attack, the best option is to run away from them. But don’t fret! As the battles progress, we’ll find ourselves in wider spaces, providing more freedom of movement. So, keep your cool, stay agile, and remember – survival is key!

The Traveler can be seized by the Orphan, triggering a Quick Time Event (QTE). During such events, you’re required to press the specified button rapidly. In the game settings, you can adjust these sequences so that they require continuous button holding instead, making it less demanding for you to successfully finish a QTE and thereby prevent damage.

Remember to make use of the swift recovery feature before heading into battle. Ensure you have at least one medkit ready, easily accessed with just a click. The character’s deteriorating health is signaled by a red glow, an icon in the lower left corner, and distortions in the visuals, indicating that she might not survive much longer.

A different approach would be to bypass the conflict altogether, circling around the Orphan and exiting from where he emerged, subsequently fleeing farther. Yet, it’s essential to bear in mind that the game may not always offer an easy exit. In certain situations, you’ll find yourself trapped in enclosed combat zones. To advance further in such cases, you’ll need to eliminate all adversaries.
