‘The Piano Lesson,’ ‘Ravens’ and More Headline First Wave of Films Unveiled at Austin Film Festival (EXCLUSIVE)

As a cinephile with a knack for finding the hidden gems amongst the blockbusters, I find myself captivated by the diverse array of films premiering this year. Each one seems to offer a unique perspective on human experiences, from the intense action-packed ‘Artifact War’ to the introspective ‘The Ego Death of Queen Cecilia’.

As a longtime film enthusiast and someone who has attended numerous festivals over the years, I am genuinely thrilled about this year’s Austin Film Festival (AFF) lineup. Having seen some of Tadanobu Asano’s work in the past, I can confidently say that his presence in the magical realist biopic “Ravens” is an exciting addition to the event. I am particularly intrigued by this film due to its unique genre and the fact that it features a recent Emmy-nominee like Asano. This year’s AFF promises to be an exceptional showcase of cinematic talent, and I can hardly wait to immerse myself in the diverse range of films on offer.

In addition to these eagerly awaited debuts, there’s the Texas-born thriller by Chris Beier and Daniel Wolfman, titled “The Ego Death of Queen Cecilia.” Another is “Silent Notes,” a romantic neo-noir with Daniel Durant (“Coda”) in the lead role. Furthermore, there’s the Netflix adaptation of the Broadway play “The Piano Lesson” starring Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington, which has just released its trailer. These films are included in the initial screenings at AFF, showcasing some of the most outstanding independent productions of the year.

Moreover, the programming also features “Black Dog,” a movie that won the Un Certain Regard award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, along with the Ecuadorian horror flick, “Shaman.”

These screenings coincide with AFF’s annual conference for writers, a gathering of distinguished award winners and panelists from the entertainment industry. Notable awardees include Kathleen Kennedy (Polly Platt Award for Producing), Ronald D. Moore (Outstanding Television Writer Award), Justin Marks (Writer’s Writer Award), and Rachel Kondo (New Voice Award). The conference will also showcase prominent speakers such as Craig Mazin, John August, Tanya Saracho, Meg LeFauve, Matt Selman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, VJ Boyd, Scott Beck, and Bryan Woods.

The entire schedule for the upcoming festival, featuring more than 100 movies and numerous discussions, will be officially revealed in September. The event, known as AFF, is set to take place from Thursday, October 24, through Thursday, October 31, 2024.
