Microsoft Announces New Xbox Adaptive Joystick

As a gamer with a unique set of challenges due to my physical limitations, I can’t help but feel a surge of gratitude towards Microsoft and their latest innovation – the Xbox Adaptive Joystick. It’s not just about gaming for me; it’s about connection, escape, and camaraderie. The thought that I could once again dive into the vibrant world of video games without feeling confined by my circumstances is nothing short of exhilarating.

At Gamescom, fresh trailers and game announcements were unveiled, yet for certain gamers, the main draw was the debut of a new Xbox Adaptive Controller. This innovative device from Microsoft aims to re-engage players with mobility restrictions in the realm of video gaming.

Through the Xbox official website, you can find the Xbox Adaptive Controller, a modified version of the regular Xbox controller, featuring four standard buttons and additional controls for bumper and trigger functions. However, it’s the thumbstick that stands out, as it is highly customizable to cater to individual gamer needs. Microsoft has developed various thumbsticks that can be 3D printed and fitted into the Xbox Adaptive Controller. Among these options, there’s one that enables players to control movement using their chin if they are unable to use their hands.

During Gamescom’s live broadcast, Kaitlyn Jones from Xbox shared through The Verge that individuals with disabilities were instrumental in testing early prototypes of the adaptive joystick. Their valuable feedback influenced the refinement of the controller’s final design and pricing structure. Furthermore, Microsoft introduced the 8BitDo Lite SE controller, expanding the choices available for gamers with disabilities.

1. The Xbox Adaptive Joystick will set you back $30 and it’s due for release in the early part of next year. Meanwhile, 8BitDo’s Lite SE controller can be found on Amazon now for a price of $60. Additionally, an individual Xbox Adaptive Controller is currently up for grabs at Best Buy.
