Megalopolis Will Stop the World

As a film enthusiast with over three decades of cinematic journeys under my belt, I must say that the anticipation for Francis Ford Coppola’s long-awaited masterpiece, Megalopolis, is nothing short of electrifying. Having grown up on the silver screen myself, I can relate to Coppola’s childhood inspiration drawn from H.G. Wells’ Things to Come and the grandeur of the Roman Empire.

For decades now, Francis Ford Coppola has been nurturing the idea for his long-cherished project, “Megalopolis.” This film, which is almost complete, was initially sparked in Coppola’s imagination as a child after witnessing H.G. Wells’s “Things to Come.” Over the years, Coppola didn’t necessarily work tirelessly on this project, but rather accumulated inspiration—mainly by pondering over the Roman Empire and gathering footage of New York City in the early 2000s, including poignant scenes from September 11.

Coppola funded the $120 million production personally, by selling a portion of his vineyard, which fueled excitement for the upcoming film, Megalopolis. This film premiered at Cannes on May 17, vying for the Palme d’Or alongside Kinds of Kindness; Oh, Canada; and other contenders (Sean Baker’s Anora eventually took home the award). Here are details about the movie, including a fresh trailer that responds to Coppola’s critics.

Who are the citizens of Megalopolis?

In the movie “Megalopolis,” Adam Driver portrays Cesar, a visionary architect who intends to transform the city into an eco-friendly paradise following a devastating incident that leaves most of it in ruins. Standing in his way is Frank Cicero, the mayor, played by Giancarlo Esposito, who’s resistant to any change. Caught between them is Julia Cicero, portrayed by Nathalie Emmanuel, who is Frank’s daughter and finds herself drawn to Cesar romantically. The ensemble cast also includes Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Grace VanderWaal, Kathryn Hunter, Dustin Hoffman, D. B. Sweeney, James Remar, Chloe Fineman, Talia Shire (Francis Ford Coppola’s sister), and Jason Schwartzman.

Oh, one tiny major detail we forgot: Cesar can freeze time.

Okay, what do you mean he can freeze time?

In the trailer released on August 21st, it appears that Cesar (the Driver) comes perilously close to plummeting from a building. However, instead of meeting his demise, he cries out, “Time stop!”, which strangely evokes memories of a trick used when one loses a game on the playground. Frozen mid-air, Cesar shivers before regaining his balance and standing upright once more. The story continues from there.

Starting off by mentioning the unfavorable opinions on Coppola’s famous movies, the trailer invites you to reconsider rumors from Cannes and highlights Cesar as an exceptional individual. It appears that no one else possesses supernatural abilities, and he’s devising a strategy to construct a city overflowing with marvels. As if on cue, massive statues come to life and dramatically collapse in the rain. The hints of Coppola’s Roman background emerge through gladiatorial games, sandals adorned with straps, and an abundance of robes as Cesar ponders the essence of building a genuine utopia. Making it easier to understand: Instead of starting with negative reviews about Coppola’s iconic films, the trailer asks you to reconsider any doubts from Cannes and emphasizes Cesar as an extraordinary individual. It seems that no one else has superhuman powers, and he’s devising a plan to establish a city filled with wonders. In response, towering statues that appear alive fall dramatically in the rain. Coppola’s Roman inspiration is noticeable through gladiator games, sandals with straps, and numerous robes as Cesar considers what it takes to create a real utopia.

When does it come out?

According to IndieWire’s report on June 17, Lionsgate plans to debut the movie in theaters and Imax on September 27. So far, there’s no information available about how they intend to involve hundreds of people within the audience for a unique, fourth-wall-breaking interaction with Ryan Gosling’s character on screen.
