Mubi and Chanel Partner to Showcase Films From Next Prize Winners, Including ‘I Am Not a Witch’ and ‘Beanpole’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a cinephile with a penchant for discovering new voices in cinema, I find the partnership between Mubi and Chanel to be nothing short of a dream collaboration. Having spent countless hours immersed in the world of films, I can attest to the transformative power they hold in showcasing unique perspectives and pushing artistic boundaries.

Mubi, a distributor for art films, production company, and streaming service, has teamed up with the high-end fashion brand Chanel. Together, they will showcase a series of movies from artists who have won the Chanel Next Prize. This prize, established in 2021, recognizes 10 talented individuals working in various fields such as art, film, performance, and music. Each recipient receives €100,000 ($111,000) to support their creative endeavors and bring their most groundbreaking projects to life.

Starting September 1st, the recently unveiled Next Prize Showcase, handpicked by Mubi, will feature seven movies from winners of both the 2022 and 2024 editions of the prize. Each film can be streamed on Mubi during this period.

The lineup features “Beanpole” directed by Kantemir Balagov, who won the Next Prize in 2024, along with “Guts and Glitz” by Fox May from 2024, “I Am Not a Witch” by Rungano Nyoni from 2022, “Here” directed by Ho Tzu Nyen in 2024, “The Human Surge” by Eduardo Williams from 2022, “Skate Story: Shortplay Depth I” by Sam Eng from 2024 and a 15-minute music video titled “Jazz Codes” by Cyrus Moussavi, created to accompany the album with the same name by musician Moor Mother, all scheduled for release in 2024.

“The unveiling of the New Creative Award Collection, a partnership between Chanel and Mubi, honors artists who have shown boldness and inventiveness in their filmmaking work,” stated Yana Peel, head of global arts and culture at Chanel. “These are recipients of the Chanel New Creative Award, an accolade given every two years to pioneers shaping the future of cultural influence through visual art, cinema, design, music, dance, and gaming.”

Added Peel expressed excitement about the emergence of fresh cinematic voices featured on Mubi, as they join forces to highlight exceptional films, alongside Chanel.

The Next Prize is a program funded by Chanel’s Cultural Foundation. So far, it has had judges like Tilda Swinton, Cao Fei (an artist), and curators Legacy Russell and Hans Ulrich Obrist.
