Jack Gleeson, best known as the actor who played Joffrey Baratheon in Game of Thrones, is coming back to TV. He will be starring in House of Guinness, a new Netflix series from the creator of Peaky Blinders.
In a video interview with The Hook shared on X (formerly Twitter), Gleeson addressed rumors that he quit acting, explaining that he simply took a break from being on camera and hadn’t left the profession entirely. “I’m happy to say it wasn’t due to any negative experiences with people,” he stated when discussing his time away from on-screen roles. “Thankfully! I know that sometimes happens, which is unfortunate,” he continued.
People often mix up the person a character is with the actor playing them, but after Game of Thrones – or even while it was still on air – I kept acting, though it was mainly through a theatre group I started with friends in Dublin. I was really focused on that at the time,” Gleeson explained. “Eventually, though, I began to miss working in front of the camera, so I returned to screen acting.
Jack Gleeson is most famous for playing Joffrey Baratheon in Game of Thrones, the oldest son and heir to King Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) and Cersei Lannister (Lena Heady). After Robert’s death, Joffrey became king and quickly showed himself to be spoiled and cruel-leading to many dramatic moments. Gleeson received a lot of positive feedback for his complex and skillful performance as the character.
After becoming known for playing Joffrey, Gleeson has continued to act in various projects, such as a guest appearance as Mo in the Netflix series Sex Education in 2023. He most recently played Robin Goodfellow in five episodes of . His latest part in Steven Knight’s House of Guinness will bring him back to historical dramas – though in a very different world than Game of Thrones.
This story explores the history of the family who created the famous Guinness brewery, beginning in 19th-century Ireland and New York. It details what happened after the death of Benjamin Guinness – the man who made the brewery so successful – and follows the lives of his four grown children: Arthur, Edward, Anne, and Ben. Gleeson will portray Byron Hedges, a made-up character who turns out to be an illegitimate child of the Guinness family, and is keen to promote the drink in the United States.
