Todd Phillips Doesn't Want To Make Joker 3

As a die-hard fan of gritty, character-driven movies, I find Todd Phillips‘ decision to nix a third Joker film both refreshing and intriguing. Having witnessed his masterful work on The Hangover trilogy, it’s clear that he’s not one to repeat himself ad infinitum like some Hollywood directors.

Within about two months, Joker: Folie à Deux will carry on the narrative that started in the 2019 Joker film. Unlike how Hollywood often leans towards creating more sequels, director Todd Phillips has already dismissed the thought of making Joker 3 as a concluding chapter for Joaquin Phoenix’s character, Arthur Fleck/Joker, and the trilogy it would form.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but share my feelings about the thrilling experience of diving into this sandbox for two movies. However, it seems we’ve managed to express all that we aimed to within this universe, as I recently shared in an interview with Variety. Despite concluding this chapter on the Joker, I’m excitedly looking forward to joining forces with Phoenix once more, this time perhaps on a project with a lighter tone.

Phillips expressed his desire to continue collaborating with Joaquin on a comedy project, as he finds Joaquin’s loose and humorous nature ideal for such roles. He believes that audiences are currently craving comedies. The upcoming trailer for Joker 2 seems to echo this sentiment when it says, “What the world needs now is love.” However, Phillips suggests that what we also need right now is a good dose of laughter.

The director became well-known in the movie world for directing The Hangover trilogy. Yet, it might be that Phillips declined to make another one because The Hangover Part III underperformed financially globally. Critics were particularly harsh towards this film when it was first released.

Furthermore, Phillips provided extra insights into the original plan for Joker 2, which originally started as a Broadway production. On another note, outside the realm of DC Comics, it was confirmed by the writer/director that his planned Hulk Hogan biopic with Chris Hemsworth is now off the table.

Joker: Folie à Deux will hit theaters on October 4.
