As a seasoned cinephile who’s spent countless nights lost in the labyrinth of world cinema, I must admit that the trailer for Pedro Almodóvar’s latest offering, “The Room Next Door,” has piqued my interest like no other film this year. The fact that it’s his first feature in English is intriguing, and the sight of Tilda Swinton‘s frantic scavenging through a metal briefcase while emitting an ear-piercing scream is a testament to Almodóvar’s knack for creating visually arresting and emotionally resonant scenes.

A single sheet of paper appears, bearing a solitary word: “Goodbye.” With this, the esteemed Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar embarks on his upcoming English-language film, “The Room Next Door“. The first trailer, released August 20th, features no dialogue, but one distinct sound – Tilda Swinton emitting a piercing scream as she sifts through a compact metal case. Indeed, the scream’s raw, guttural quality suggests it is not in Spanish, owing to its Germanic roots. The movie stars both Swinton and Julianne Moore, who skillfully portray contrasting manifestations of “brittle,” according to the film’s press release. In this intriguing plot, they are said to encounter each other “in an intense yet oddly endearing predicament.” We speculate that the scenario could involve an explosion at a red-lipstick factory.

The movie, titled “The Room Next Door“, is adapted from the 2020 novel “What Are You Going Through” by Sigrid Nunez. It features two prominent actresses, along with John Turturro and Alessandro Nivola in key roles. This movie will make its debut at the Venice Film Festival starting August 28, where it will compete for awards. However, audiences outside of the festival won’t be able to watch it until December 20. Coincidentally, this date aligns perfectly with the idea that seeing Moore and Swinton in an Almodóvar film is the ultimate Christmas gift.
