As a film enthusiast who’s been around the block more times than I care to count, I can confidently say that the upcoming horror-comedy “Hell of a Summer” has piqued my interest. Having seen Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk’s promising debut at TIFF 2023, I’m eager to see what these young talents have in store for us. The blend of horror and comedy is always a fun ride, and when it comes with a dose of Gen Z representation, it’s even more enticing.
Neon acquired the American distribution rights for “A Wicked Summer,” the horror-comedy film by Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk, which made its debut at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival.
In their first directorial venture, the lead actor of “Stranger Things” on Netflix, named Wolfhard, and Bryk, who was seen in “When You Finish Saving the World,” an independent film, will be directing the movie. Joining them in the cast is Fred Hechinger, known for his roles in “Thelma” and “Gladiator 2”. As of now, a specific release date hasn’t been announced, but Neon plans to premiere the movie in cinemas during 2025.
“A Nightmare at Camp Pineway”
Last year at TIFF, I shared my top discussion point with EbMaster – the frustration over how teen movies nowadays often miss the mark in representing our age group authentically. And guess what? My colleague and I simply asked ourselves, ‘Why don’t we take matters into our own hands?’ So, that’s exactly what we did!
“The movie titled ‘A Blast of a Summer’ was entirely funded and supervised by 30West. Fred Hechinger joined forces as a producer alongside Michael Costigan from Aggregate Films, Jason Bateman, Drew Brennan, and Jay Van Hoy from Parts & Labor. The arrangement for this production was facilitated by Jason Wald on behalf of Neon, in collaboration with 30West and CAA Media Finance.”
Neon’s latest movie offerings feature the terrifying success “Longlegs,” earning $100 million worldwide so far; “Cuckoo,” a captivating mystery with Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens in the lead roles; and “Immaculate,” a dark retelling of religious stories starring Sydney Sweeney. Coming soon, independent distributor Neon will present Joshua Oppenheimer’s musical “The End,” featuring Tilda Swinton, as well as Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner “Anora.”
