What Happens To Mike & Rachel After The Drama’s Explosive Ending Predicted By Stars

The show is full of drama, both in front of and behind the cameras, but everyone is really talking about the shocking events that happen at the very end.

Kristoffer Borgli’s new A24 film initially appeared to be a sweet romance about a couple, Emma Harwood (Zendaya) and Charlie Thompson (Robert Pattinson), getting ready to tie the knot. But as the release date neared, A24 began hinting at a much darker story hidden beneath the surface.

I was reading a really interesting interview with Alana Haim and Mamoudou Athie over at ScreenRant – they play Mike and Rachel, Emma and Charlie’s best friends in the movie, The Drama. They were talking about how shocking the ending is, and what happens to their characters afterward. When the interviewer asked how they see Emma and Charlie’s marriage continuing after everything that happens, Alana pointed out that things were already pretty shaky between the two of them to begin with.

It might seem strange, but I really believe Mike and Rachel had much more significant issues than what we saw at that dinner. Their problems started long before that. We filmed so many couples therapy sessions – it felt like two or three times a week, almost constantly. They were constantly fighting from the start. Throughout the show, I kept wondering what Mike had originally seen in Rachel, and what their relationship was like when it was good.

Mamoudou Athie described a common relationship dynamic – one person is usually more open and expressive, while the other is more reserved. He feels this particular relationship has shifted, possibly leading up to the wedding.

Alana Haim: Yeah, I feel like on their honeymoon or something, something went down.

Mamoudou Athie: It just got a little bit more tense. Do you think they divorced?

Alana Haim jokingly said she and her partner had a baby hoping it would fix their relationship, but it didn’t. She feels they were missing only two things: a baby and a dog. She then quipped that they’ll probably get divorced once their child turns eighteen.

Mamoudou Athie: I don’t think Mike is happy, but he’s like, “Well, I guess this is my life now.”

At its core, The Drama explores how relationships are tested when people reveal their flaws, and whether those we care about will accept us as we are or leave. A central storyline involves Charlie and Emma, particularly after Emma admits to once planning a school shooting as a response to being bullied. Fortunately, she never acted on her plan, especially since another shooting occurred on the same day, causing her to reconsider.

The surprising news came out during a dinner party with the couples – Mike and Rachel, and Charlie and Emma. They had been playing a game where everyone shared their most embarrassing or regrettable moments. This led to shocking revelations: Mike admitted he once used a former girlfriend to shield himself from a dog, Charlie confessed to cyberbullying someone so severely they had to relocate, Rachel revealed she once locked a friend in a closet inside an old RV, and Emma shared a disturbing story from her teenage years.

While the movie The Drama mainly follows Emma and Charlie, the film also hints at trouble in Mike and Rachel’s relationship. Rachel reacts strongly to Emma’s confession, likely because of her past trauma with school shootings. Though the movie doesn’t fully explore the consequences, Mike and Rachel’s already shaky relationship seems unlikely to survive.

The Drama is available to watch in theaters.
