Johnny Depp’s ‘Modi’ Biopic to Premiere at San Sebastian Film Festival

As a seasoned cinephile who has seen the highs and lows of Hollywood, I must admit that the news about Johnny Depp’s return to directing with “Modi — Three Days on the Wings of Madness” at the San Sebastian Film Festival stirs a mix of intrigue and anticipation within me. Having been a fan since his days as Captain Jack Sparrow, I’ve witnessed his transformative journey both on and off-screen.

Johnny Depp’s second film directing project, titled “Modi – Three Days on the Wings of Madness,” is set to premiere at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in the coming month.

The movie featuring Riccardo Scamarcio as renowned artist Amedeo Modigliani is set to debut in the festival’s non-competitive section. As described in its summary, “Modi” is a story about art, love, and rejection that takes us on a thrilling 72-hour journey through the chaotic streets and bars of World War I-torn Paris. The film also stars Stephen Graham, Al Pacino, and Antonia Desplat.

“Johnny Depp”, who last directed a film in 1997 with the critically disliked “The Brave”, is back behind the camera with the movie “Modi”. This project is one of his first since his high-profile court case with ex-wife Amber Heard in 2022, where he sued her for defamation following accusations of domestic abuse. Despite winning the lawsuit, the ensuing controversy has affected Depp’s career. He made a return to film festivals at Cannes in 2023 with the screening of “Jeanne du Barry”, and there were whispers that “Modi” might debut at the Venice Film Festival, but it was not selected in the end.

Accompanying pictures from the “Modi” movie set, Depp described crafting the film as both rewarding and personally enlightening.

“He gratefully acknowledged the tireless efforts and creative brilliance of the cast, team, and producers. Specifically, he thanked Al for asking him to be part of the project; working with Pacino was an offer he couldn’t refuse. He praised Modi as a showcase of the collaborative nature of independent filmmaking, and expressed his eagerness to share this captivating tale with audiences worldwide.”
