The Criterion Collection's 40-Film Box Set Costs More Than The PS5 You Watch Blu-Rays On

As a lifelong cinephile and collector of classic films, I can’t help but get excited about the CC40 Blu-ray bundle from The Criterion Collection! With my extensive library already filled with their releases, I know that this 40-film box set will only further enhance my collection.

For the past four decades, The Criterion Collection has been in charge of restoring and preserving numerous classic and modern movies. To mark its 40th anniversary, they’re unveiling a massive 40-film collection called CC40 on November 19. This colossal set includes 49 discs, 40 films, countless hours of bonus material, and a comprehensive 216-page book, all housed within a high-quality hardcover slipcase.

The CC40 collection typically retails at $800, which might give you a shock (it certainly does!), but if you preorder from Amazon or Barnes and Noble, you can get it for $560 instead. That’s a substantial 30% off, and even Criterion itself offers an early-bird deal at $640. However, considering the quality of the films included, you’re essentially paying just $14 per movie, making it an excellent value for a Criterion Collection Blu-ray.

  • Amazon — $560 ($800)
  • Barnes & Noble — $560 ($800)
  • Criterion — $640 ($800)

Beyond forty carefully restored movies, this collection offers unique packaging, a leather-bound slipcase, and a comprehensive 216-page book filled with essays penned by critics, authors, and industry professionals. The Criterion Collection emphasizes that this isn’t a top 40 selection or a historical overview, but rather a diverse array of films showcasing the creative breadth within the community.

When you pre-order an item on Amazon, it secures the lowest price for you (even if prices drop before release), but keep in mind that if Amazon runs out of stock, you can still find the same collection at Barnes & Noble for sale. Also, it’s good to know that Amazon won’t bill your credit card until your order is ready to be shipped.

CC40 Special Features

Regarding extra perks, you’ll be treated to various soundtracks, behind-the-scenes commentaries, documentaries, interviews with cast and crew members, outtakes, promotional clips, and much more. As a die-hard gaming enthusiast, I can’t tell for sure if the preorders for this Criterion Collection will run out. The Criterion Collection is quite renowned in the physical media collector community, and it’s not hard to see why. There are countless Blu-ray connoisseurs who eagerly await each new release from Criterion. However, this particular Blu-ray collection comes with a hefty price tag, even though it offers a pretty decent value per film. So, I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that the quality of these films justifies the cost for all us avid collectors.

Check out another fantastic addition to the Criterion Collection, Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films! This set, now available for only $140 (originally priced at $225), includes a collection of 15 giant monster movies released between 1954 and 1975.
