Box Office: ‘Alien: Romulus’ Scares Up $108 Million Globally, ‘It Ends With Us’ Surpasses $180 Million

As someone who has been following the box office trends for decades, I must say that the success of “Alien: Romulus” is truly a sight to behold. The fact that it has outperformed both “A Quiet Place: Day One” and “Prometheus” in international sales is quite impressive. It seems like the alien terror is still captivating audiences worldwide, even after 45 years!

“In its initial worldwide release, the movie ‘Alien: Romulus’ managed to earn a staggering sum of $108.2 million, with an impressive $66.7 million coming from 49 different international locations.”

Disney, the creator of the latest installment in the ongoing sci-fi horror series, has shared that global ticket sales for this film are currently outperforming “A Quiet Place: Day One” by 47% and “Prometheus” by 17% in comparable markets, based on current exchange rates. This trend is encouraging as “A Quiet Place: Day One,” a prequel from Paramount Pictures, has earned $122 million internationally, while “Prometheus” concluded its international run with $276 million.

In its initial domestic release, “Alien: Romulus” earned $41.5 million, placing it as the second highest opening weekend for the franchise, trailing only “Prometheus” which grossed $51 million. Globally, the film had a strong start in China, amassing $25.7 million – the second-largest debut of a Hollywood movie in China this year. After a period where Chinese audiences have largely overlooked Hollywood films due to the pandemic, “Alien: Romulus” has managed to capture audience interest. Other notable earnings came from South Korea ($5.4 million), the United Kingdom ($4.8 million) and France ($3.8 million).

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share my thoughts on “Alien: Romulus,” the latest addition to the iconic franchise that started 45 years ago with Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking 1979 film “Alien.” Directed by Fede Alvarez, known for his work on “Don’t Breathe,” this $80 million production follows a group of young space colonists, including Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, and Isabela Merced, who stumble upon a chilling life form while exploring a dilapidated space station.

According to David A. Gross, a significant factor behind Alien’s achievement has been its performance outside the U.S. The upcoming movie, Romulus, is expected to follow a similar trend, but there might be a decrease in foreign earnings due to the fact that many horror films have been generating less income abroad since the pandemic.

In the meantime, the movie “It Ends With Us,” featuring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, has quietly become a major success. Over the weekend, it earned an impressive $33.1 million at international box offices, raising its total foreign earnings to $82.2 million. This brings the worldwide earnings of this adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel to an astounding $180 million after only 10 days on screen. Sony Pictures and Baldoni’s Wayfarer Studios jointly financed “It Ends With Us” for $25 million, resulting in substantial profits.

Disney’s action-packed Marvel collaboration, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” brought in a substantial amount during its latest weekend, earning approximately $32.9 million across 52 international markets and an additional $61.9 million worldwide. In total, this Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman-led blockbuster has amassed a staggering $596.8 million internationally and $545.8 million in North America since its release four weekends ago. This week, “Deadpool & Wolverine” surpassed “Joker” as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, with a global total of $1.14 billion.
