Okay, spoiler alert! If you haven’t seen the latest episode of Daredevil: Born Again season 2, turn back now. This episode really starts connecting the dots within the MCU’s grittier, street-level world, and it does that by finally telling us what happened to a character we knew from the old Netflix Defenders shows. I’m talking about the team with Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, Luke Cage played by Mike Colter, Iron Fist with Finn Jones, and, of course, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher. It’s a cool connection for fans of that earlier run of Marvel TV.
Three of the five heroes from the old Netflix shows are now back in current Marvel projects. The ‘Defenders Saga’ included a lot of different characters – both good and bad, like Kilgrave, Cottonmouth, Misty Knight, and Colleen Wing, as well as supporting characters like Stick and Turk. Now, the new season of Daredevil: Born Again has revealed what happened to another one of those original Netflix characters.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Answers A Major Question
Marvel surprised fans by releasing episodes 2 and 3 of Daredevil: Born Again at the same time. The first episode immediately dropped a significant piece of backstory from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When the villain Bullseye, played by Wilson Bethel, enters a church, he inquires about Sister Maggie, who is revealed to be Matt Murdock’s mother. The show then explains that she is currently taking a year-long break in Rome.
Okay, so after the team-up in The Defenders, Matt Murdock really went off the grid, and thankfully, Sister Maggie was there to help him recover. That led a lot of us fans to wonder – with Fisk cracking down on masked heroes and sending out his task force, why didn’t Matt turn to his mother for help? It felt like a natural storyline. Well, the season two premiere didn’t go there, and now Marvel has finally addressed that question directly, giving us an answer to something fans have been pondering for a while.
Will Sister Maggie Ever Return To The MCU?
Given the current situation in New York City – with Fisk in charge and a harsh police presence – Sister Maggie’s return during the events of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 doesn’t seem likely. However, a recent mention of her in a returning Marvel series opens the possibility for her to reappear in season 3.
Following significant changes to the show’s direction, the new Daredevil: Born Again feels more like the original Daredevil series. Many familiar faces from the Netflix Daredevil shows and the broader ‘Defenders’ universe are returning, including Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again. Given this trend, it makes sense to bring Sister Maggie back as well.
With the creative team stating that the story arc involving Mayor Fisk will conclude in season 2, season 3 could be set a year or more later, which would allow Sister Maggie’s year-long trip to Rome to finish. After losing his friend Foggy Nelson and struggling with Fisk’s control over the city, Matt Murdock could really benefit from having his mother’s support in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series.
