James Gunn quickly established his style after taking charge of the DC movie universe with last year’s “Superman.” While fans of Gunn appreciated the film’s unique approach, some Superman fans felt it strayed too far from the character’s traditional portrayal. Ultimately, the film felt more like a James Gunn project than a true Superman story.
James Gunn is now involved in his second major DC Universe film, “Supergirl.” Although Craig Gillespie directed this one, Gunn’s style is clearly present. The first trailer showcases his signature touches – things like using popular songs in unexpected ways, a playful and often silly tone, and action sequences that are visually flashy and over-the-top.
Molly Alcock steps into the role of Kara Zor-El, Superman’s troubled cousin. While traveling the galaxy with her digital dog, Krypto, she’s asked by a young girl named Eve Ridley to help her get revenge for her father’s death. The show features plenty of villains – space pirates, mercenaries, and more – thanks to writer Ana Nogueira. However, Jason Momoa’s portrayal of Lobo, the tough anti-hero he’s always wanted to play, is the most memorable part. Overall, the series feels like typical James Gunn work.
The new movie “Supergirl” comes out in theaters on June 26th. Watch the trailer and tell me if you plan to see it!
