There’s talk that Disney is considering moving the release date of its next big Marvel movie to avoid competing with the highly anticipated third Dune film in theaters.
Both the new Avengers movie and Dune 3 are currently scheduled to come out on December 18th. People are already playfully calling it “Dunesday,” continuing the trend of back-to-back movie releases we saw last year with “Barbenheimer.”
The next Avengers movie, currently titled Avengers: Doomsday, will be the fifth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It will finally feature Doctor Doom – played by Robert Downey Jr. – as a major character, following a quick cameo in the recent Fantastic Four film. While his motives are still unknown, the movie is set to reunite Captain America (Chris Evans) with the X-Men.
The upcoming film Dune 3 is expected to conclude director Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series, and Disney reportedly wants to reschedule Avengers: Doomsday to avoid the two movies competing for viewers in theaters.
Avengers: Doomsday might get an earlier release date before Dune 3
According to industry insider John Campea, a source working with movie theaters has indicated that Marvel is considering moving the release of Avengers: Doomsday to December 11th, placing it one week before Dune 3.
The new Marvel movie is expected to be a huge success at the box office no matter when it comes out. However, a possible release date change might be related to IMAX theaters. Warner Bros. has already booked all IMAX screens in the US for the December 18th release of the next Dune movie.
If Disney releases ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on December 11th, it would allow fans to experience the movie on the best screens for a week. This limited release could also encourage people to quickly buy IMAX tickets, creating a sense of urgency and potentially selling out showings.
Campea said the talks were inconclusive, leaving the future open for either project. While this doesn’t confirm Disney is concerned about a potential Dune 3 being more successful than the next Marvel movie, they may simply prefer to avoid having the two films compete for attention.
Okay, so we’re still waiting to hear about Dune 3 and that Avengers: Doomsday movie, but while we wait, I figured I’d share the movies I’m really excited about coming out in 2026!
