James Cameron may soon be returning to Pandora for .
Following the successful release of Avatar: The Way of Water two years prior, Avatar: Fire and Ash premiered in December, picking up the story of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his family. While James Cameron has plans for two more Avatar films in 2029 and 2031, he’s also stated that those sequels aren’t guaranteed.
Now, in an interview with ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender for Avatar: Fire & Ash‘s home release on March 31, franchise executive producer Rae Sanchini reveals that the start of production on Avatar 4 may not be too far off. Sanchini stresses that work will have to get going on the fourth and fifth movies “pretty soon” because of the immense amount of prep required.
Sanchini recently shared an update about Avatar 4, just before the 4K UHD and Blu-ray versions of the film become available on May 19th. This came in response to a question about whether director James Cameron might finally begin work on his planned adaptation of Fantastic Voyage this year. You can read her complete statement below.
We might be. Fantastic Voyage has been in development for a while, and while we can’t share details yet, we’re making progress in the early stages. It’s a project we’ve wanted to do for a long time. Plus, the Avatar films require a lot of planning, so we need to start working on those soon. James Cameron also has several original ideas he’s exploring.
Sanchini’s statement comes after James Cameron gave an encouraging update at the Saturn Awards in March. Cameron clarified, “We haven’t made a final decision about making more films yet.” However, he added that if he does move forward – which he thinks is probable, though not certain – they will definitely use what they learned from the previous three movies.
As a big movie fan, I was checking Disney’s latest release schedule, and it’s good to see that Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are still planned for 2029 and 2031. But knowing how long it takes to make these Avatar films – all the planning, shooting, and editing – I’m a little skeptical about whether they’ll actually stick to those dates. They really take their time with these projects!
While Avatar: Fire and Ash didn’t perform quite as well as The Way of Water, it was still a successful film for Disney, so it’s logical they want to complete the Avatar story. The movie earned $1.485 billion globally, with $404 million coming from North American theaters and $1.081 billion from international audiences.
The third Avatar movie received mixed reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, currently holding a 66% approval rating. While critics generally loved the movie’s beautiful visuals and exciting action, some felt it was too similar to The Way of Water.
Viewers seem to really enjoy the latest Sully family film, giving it a strong 90% rating. This is similar to the 92% audience score for The Way of Water, though critics gave that film a score of 76%.
While many details about Avatar 4‘s plot are still unknown, filming for the first part of the movie has already begun, and it will likely jump forward in time. Although James Cameron hasn’t officially announced his involvement, a recent statement suggests he’ll probably return to directing on Pandora soon.
