Next-gen Xbox and PS6 predicted to hit almost $1,000 as consoles become a “luxury”

New game consoles are likely to be significantly pricier than the ones we have now, potentially costing up to $999 for some versions, according to industry experts.

Nintendo is warning that prices for its hardware may increase. This is due to rising production costs, fueled by the growing popularity of AI and issues like tariffs, which Nintendo has been trying to address.

Analysts warn next-gen consoles could cost 50% more

I was reading GamesRadar, and apparently Joost van Druenen, who knows a lot about the games industry, thinks the PS6 and the next Xbox (called ‘Project Helix’) could end up costing about 50% more than the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. He says this might happen even if Sony and Microsoft don’t want to raise the prices that much!

Van Druenen believes the company is hesitant to increase hardware prices because they currently sell consoles at a loss to attract customers. Their main source of income comes from game sales. He anticipates the next generation of consoles will cost 50% more than the current ones.

When the PlayStation 5 came out in 2020, it cost $499. If the price of the next model, the PS6, increased by 50%, the base version would likely cost around $750. More advanced versions, with features like extra storage or a disc drive, could potentially cost up to $999.

According to Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games, a PS6 model costing at least $999 is a realistic possibility. Industry analyst Lars van Druenen believes consoles are becoming increasingly expensive, and gaming on them will likely be considered a luxury purchase.

Sony and Microsoft haven’t yet revealed details about the next versions of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. However, Sony recently announced on March 27th that the price of the PS5 will be going up.
