Another Sega Game Is Getting Turned Into A Movie, And It's Probably Not One You Expect

As a seasoned gamer with memories of the 90s vividly etched in my mind, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia at the news of Eternal Champions gracing the silver screen. I remember spending countless hours on that Genesis console, battling it out with characters from different eras, all vying to become the new Eternal Champion. This game was a true testament to Sega‘s innovative spirit back in the day.

Despite Borderlands not performing well at the box office initially, it doesn’t necessarily signal that Hollywood is abandoning video game adaptations. In fact, the triumph of Sonic the Hedgehog’s two films might have paved the way for another popular Sega game to hit the big screen: Eternal Champions.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Skydance is currently developing an Eternal Champions film featuring live-action scenes. This game was initially released by Sega for the Genesis console in 1993. The storyline centers around a competition to determine who would become the new Eternal Champion, with participants hailing from various time periods. These characters would engage in combat until one emerged victorious. The triumphant contender could then continue their life and fulfill their destiny as humanity’s champion, while the losers were sent back to the exact moment of their respective deaths.

Screenwriter Derek Connolly, known for Jurassic World and its sequel Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, will pen the script for Eternal Champions. His past works include Safety Not Guaranteed, Kong: Skull Island, Detective Pikachu, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Upcoming projects include Wes Ball’s Legend of Zelda movie at Sony, as well as a G.I. Joe/Transformers film featuring Chris Hemsworth.

Toru Nakahara is set to create Eternal Champions for Sega, whereas David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger will act as producers for Skydance in this project. However, the release date for the Eternal Champions film remains undetermined at this time.
