As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the announcement of a biopic about John Madden, the legendary figure behind one of the most iconic video game franchises, has me absolutely pumped! The casting of Nicolas Cage, who’s known for his flair and charisma, seems like a perfect fit.
A biographical movie titled “Madden” is being developed about John Madden, a former Super Bowl-winning coach who transitioned into NFL broadcasting and became a video game franchise icon. The project has been spearheaded by writer and director David O. Russell, with Nicolas Cage set to star as the main character in the film.
In a statement to Deadline, Russell announced that Nicolas Cage, a renowned and innovative actor, will embody the epitome of American originality, exuberance, and resilience – a character reminiscent of the cherished national icon John Madden. This film, set against the backdrop of the 1970s, will showcase the exhilaration, humanity, and genius of Madden, all while capturing the fierce style, relentless determination, and unique individualism of Al Davis, the owner of the underdog Oakland Raiders. The movie promises to be a vibrant, inventive, and stylish portrayal of that era.
In the NFL, Madden served as the Raiders’ head coach from 1969 to 1978, during this period he claimed seven division titles and a Super Bowl victory. If a film about Madden focuses only on the ’70s, it would overlook some of the most intriguing phases in his life. After retiring from coaching, Madden gained fame as an NFL broadcaster, and played a significant role in creating the popular Madden NFL video game series, which remains active even after his passing in 2021.
As a gamer, I’ve been thrilled to see my favorite actor, Nicolas Cage, making a comeback with some fantastic roles in movies like Pig, Renfield, and Longlegs. The cherry on top is that he’s set to reprise his voice role from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in MGM+ and Prime Video’s live-action series, Spider-Man Noir! It’s going to be an exciting ride!
Madden will be produced by Amazon MGM Studios. The project doesn’t currently have a release date.
