Call Of Duty Mod Shut Down By Activision Hours Before Launch, Leading To Review Bombing

As a gamer with decades of gaming experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions upon hearing about Activision‘s latest move. On one hand, I understand the need for intellectual property protection and the rights of original creators. However, on the other hand, as someone who has seen countless hours of joy and camaraderie come from these fan-made projects, it’s disheartening to see them shut down.

In an unexpected turn of events, Activision has halted the launch of a much-awaited Call of Duty mod titled H2M, mere hours before its scheduled release. This mod was designed to rekindle the multiplayer experience of the original Modern Warfare II, offering what even Activision itself had not provided. Unfortunately, it seems that the developers’ vision won’t materialize as planned due to a cease and desist order issued by Activision – a move reminiscent of their action against the fan-made Call of Duty SM2 mod in 2023.

According to the developers, they will be adhering to the directive and ceasing all operations effective immediately and indefinitely. This command was received on August 15, with the unfortunate timing being only a day before the modders were planning to unveil the H2M mod on August 16.

To use this mod, you’d need a copy of 2017’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. In the run-up to the mod’s launch, there was a noticeable surge in sales for Modern Warfare Remastered on Steam. However, once the cease and desist order was announced, players retaliated by leaving negative reviews, causing the recent rating of Modern Warfare Remastered to be predominantly unfavorable.

Recently, Modern Warfare Remastered has been discounted on Steam, leading some to assume that Activision is taking advantage of the hype surrounding H2M. Yet, it’s worth noting that this game often goes on sale.

Today, we’ve been served a legal demand from Activision Publishing regarding the H2M-Mod project that our team is involved in. In accordance with this demand, we will cease all activities related to the project right away and permanently.

Enthusiasts who admired the craftsmanship of the H2M mod have shown a desire to support the creators financially, however, one of the founders stated that the team currently has no intentions of accepting donations. They also warned potential individuals attempting to profit from H2M, stating “we are not the ones trying to make money off H2M, be cautious.” Additionally, the developer hinted that the modding group could shift its focus towards developing an original game in the future.

Moving on to some exciting Call of Duty updates, Activision plans to unveil details about Black Ops 6 at the Call of Duty Next event scheduled for August 28. Immediately following this event, the beta phase for Black Ops 6 commences on August 30.
