In Tennessee, police used facial recognition technology to identify and arrest Angela Lipps, a 50-year-old woman. She was wanted for crimes in North Dakota, despite her insisting she had never been to that state.
On July 14, 2025, Lipps stated she was watching four children when U.S. Marshals unexpectedly arrived and arrested her while pointing guns at her.
Police used facial recognition technology to identify a suspect, Lipps, following a series of bank robberies in Fargo, North Dakota. Lipps claims she wasn’t contacted or questioned before officers arrested her and took her into custody.
Lipps was held in jail for more than five months while the case was being processed. When her hearing finally took place, the charges were reportedly dismissed very quickly – in just five minutes.

Lipps was arrested on July 14th and revealed her connection to a bank fraud scheme in North Dakota. Authorities say a woman used a fake military ID to withdraw tens of thousands of dollars from multiple banks in Fargo.
City officials used facial recognition software called Clearview AI to review surveillance footage, according to CNN. Police Chief Dave Zibolski claims he didn’t know about the program and wouldn’t have authorized its use, and it has now been banned.
According to a statement, the software found someone who looks similar to Angela Lipps and flagged them as a possible suspect.

After this program’s investigation, a 50-year-old Tennessee woman was arrested and held in jail for five months while authorities gathered more details.
A GoFundMe page created for Lipps states she’s never visited North Dakota and has never flown on a plane.
“I have never been to North Dakota or even any of the surrounding states,” she said.
I spent 108 days in a Tennessee county jail without being able to post bail. No one ever spoke to me; I simply had to wait. It’s also claimed that I wasn’t even allowed access to my dentures during that time.
On October 30th, she was flown to North Dakota to attend the trial. Lipps stated that this was the first time she had ever been on a plane and that she was very frightened.
Once she could share her side of the story, she said the situation quickly unraveled, taking only five minutes. Bank records showed Lipps was actually in Tennessee at the time of the crime, proving her claim.
I was so relieved to hear the charges were dropped on Christmas Eve! But then I read that they just left Lipps outside in the freezing winter, wearing only summer clothes! Can you believe it? And apparently, nobody even offered her a ride home. It’s just awful!
After spending over five months in jail, Lipps said she lost all of her possessions. Her family had to put her things in storage, but they couldn’t afford the storage fees. She also lost her apartment, her Social Security benefits, her health insurance, her dog, and her car.
Lipps’ lawyers are reportedly exploring civil rights claims but haven’t yet filed a lawsuit.
