Mary Beth Hurt, known for her roles in films like The World According to Garp and Woody Allen’s Interiors, has passed away at the age of 79. Variety reports that she died from complications related to Alzheimer’s disease. Her daughter, Molly, and husband, Paul Schrader, shared the news in a statement on social media. They described her as a graceful and fiercely kind woman who embraced her many roles as an actress, wife, sister, mother, aunt, and friend. They found comfort in knowing she was no longer suffering and was at peace with her sisters.
Mary Beth Hurt, born in 1946, took the name Hurt after marrying William Hurt in 1971. Growing up in Iowa, one of her babysitters was actress Jean Seberg. She studied acting at both the University of Iowa and Tisch School of the Arts, and received a Tony Award nomination just a year after completing her education.
Frances Hurt began her acting career on the New York stage in 1974. She first appeared on screen in Woody Allen’s Interiors, playing the middle sister alongside Diane Keaton and Kristin Griffith. She later gained recognition for her role in The World According to Garp (1982). Throughout her career, Hurt starred in many notable films, including The Age of Innocence, Six Degrees of Separation, Bringing Out the Dead, Lady in the Water, Young Adult, and The Dead Girl, for which she received an Independent Spirit Award nomination.
Marsha Hunt often rejected film roles, explaining to the New York Times in 1989 that half of the scripts she received were simply uninteresting. She wasn’t concerned with the size of the roles, but rather the lack of substance. She’d only take on a less compelling role if she hadn’t worked in a while. Instead, Hunt remained active in theater, earning three Tony nominations throughout her career. She was nominated for Trelawny of the ‘Wells’ in 1975, Crimes of the Heart in 1981 (winning both an Obie and a Drama Desk Award for this performance), and Benefactors in 1985.
Mary Beth Hurt and William divorced in 1981. The following year, she married filmmaker Paul Schrader, and they had two children: a daughter and a son. Hurt also acted in two of Schrader’s films, Affliction and Light Sleeper.
