Invincible Season 4 Episode Officially Sets Record Low IMDb Rating For Prime Video’s Superhero Series

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Invincible season 4, episode 4, titled “Hurm.” The latest episode of Invincible has received the lowest IMDb rating of any episode in the series.

Okay, so as a huge animation and superhero fan, I’ve been following Invincible since it dropped in 2021, and it’s consistently blown me away. The reviews for season 4 are incredible – seriously, a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and that’s three seasons in a row now! People are loving it too, with a 91% audience score. Even the initial episodes of the new season did really well on IMDb – 8.3, 9.3, and 8.2. That 9.3 rating for episode two? That’s the fifth highest-rated episode of the whole series, which is pretty amazing!

The latest episode of Invincible, season 4, episode 4, titled “Hurm,” received a 6.9/10 rating from over 11,000 fans, making it the lowest-rated episode of the series so far. Previously, season 2’s “In About Six Hours I Lose My Virginity to a Fish” held that spot with a 7.2, but now it’s the second-lowest rated episode.

Okay, so Invincible has stuck pretty close to the comics so far, but episode 4 of season 4 really throws a curveball. It’s a completely original story! We see Mark Grayson, aka Invincible, pulled into Hell by Damien Darkblood – and the mission is wild: restore Satan and take on Volcanikka. Even as a longtime reader of the comics, I was surprised – this episode adds a whole new layer to the Invincible universe that you won’t find anywhere else in the source material. It’s a bold move, and honestly, it works!

The episode’s unique style has received a varied response, resulting in a 6.9 rating. While some viewers enjoyed the new storyline, the complex moral dilemmas faced by Mark in Hell, the impressive animation, and the return of Nolan Grayson/Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), others were disappointed. These viewers felt the episode strayed too far from the main plot and questioned the need to revisit the character of Damien Darkblood, especially considering the short, eight-episode season length.

Even though the episode received a mixed response and has the lowest rating of the series so far, it does significantly advance the storyline. Mark’s experiences in Hell and his talks with Damien Darkblood help him resolve some of the internal struggles he’s faced since the end of Invincible season 3. Meanwhile, Atom Eve (Gillian Jacobs) prepares to share the news of her pregnancy with Mark, but is interrupted by the shocking return of Omni-Man to Earth.

Okay, so as a huge fan, I’m really excited (and a little worried!) about what Omni-Man’s return means for Mark and the whole Viltrum war. But honestly, the timing is brutal. Just when his mom, Debbie, is finally finding happiness with Paul, BAM, there he is! And it looks like the ‘Hell’ storyline wasn’t just a one-off either. Damien Darkblood is back, and it seems Satan has sent him up here with a new assignment. It’s setting up a much bigger picture, and I can’t wait to see where it goes!

Last July, it was confirmed that Invincible will return for a fifth season, and voice recording is already finished. Robert Kirkman, the creator, has expressed his desire to make between seven and nine seasons total, suggesting there’s still a lot more story to come even after the mixed response to the fourth season’s fourth episode.
