As a huge Pokémon fan, I was so excited to hear the producer of Pokémon Champions, Masaaki Hoshino, talk about the game’s future! He said they’re really building it to be something that lasts… well, forever! And get this – he even hinted that we might eventually see a game with ten thousand different Pokémon species! That’s incredible to think about, and it sounds like they’re planning for the game to grow and evolve for a really long time.
Pokémon Champions is a new game from TPCi that focuses on competitive battling. Unlike most Pokémon games with a set story, this one is designed to be constantly updated and evolve over time, serving as a platform for player-versus-player battles. It will also support future Pokémon game releases, keeping the experience fresh.
It took almost three decades for the world of Pokémon to grow to 1,000 different species, and now there are 1,025 officially listed in the National Pokédex. Over nine generations of games, the series has consistently added roughly 100 or more new creatures with each release, but the thought of reaching 10,000 Pokémon seems highly unlikely.

Why Pokemon Champions won’t just let everyone use everything
In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Junichi Masuda hinted that the new Pokemon Champions game is designed for long-term play, potentially lasting as long as the Pokemon franchise continues. He even suggested the game could eventually accommodate a massive number of Pokemon, possibly reaching “2,000, 3,000, or even 10,000.”
Hoshino explained that the team wants to feature a wide variety of Pokémon, but won’t release them all at once. Instead, they plan to introduce different groups of playable Pokémon periodically, using a system similar to the current competitive rulesets.
This method appears to be intended to keep the game understandable. Balancing a competitive battle game is already difficult with over 1,000 Pokémon, and allowing access to thousands more at once would, according to Hoshino, make things overly complex.
The main point is that Pokémon Champions is designed to be a long-term series, but what’s really exciting is how far it could potentially go. Considering it took decades to reach over 1,000 different Pokémon, the idea of 10,000 seems less like a realistic short-term goal and more like a signal that the franchise could continue expanding indefinitely.
