As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m thrilled to hear it’s finally coming back to theaters this spring with The Mandalorian and Grogu! It’s been about seven years since we last saw a Star Wars film on the big screen. And get this – about a year after that, Shawn Levy, the director behind the upcoming Deadpool and Wolverine, is going to launch a brand new Star Wars story with Star Wars: Starfighter. This one promises to take the franchise in a completely new direction, moving beyond the Skywalker family saga. Details are still secret, but Ryan Gosling is set to star, alongside Flynn Gray, a young actor who’s about to have a major breakthrough role!
With only two theatrical Star Wars films released since 2019’s Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, excitement for the new movie is very high. The previous two films, Episode IX and Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, caused a lot of disagreement among fans. Now, as the franchise moves forward, one of its key storytellers is looking back to earlier stories for ideas.
At MegaCon 2026 in Orlando, Florida, Jonathan Tropper, the writer of Star Wars: Starfighter, told MovieWeb‘s Joe Deckelmeier what he hoped his new movie would achieve. He remembered being a child when he first saw the original Star Wars (Episode IV – A New Hope) and explained he wanted his film to have a similar lasting impact on a new generation of viewers.
Being a lifelong ‘Star Wars’ fan, I have strong childhood memories of seeing it in theaters with my dad and brother when I was seven – it was a truly formative experience. It’s similar to how some musicians describe seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. For me, ‘Star Wars’ completely changed my perspective, and to now contribute to that universe by creating a story that might inspire a new generation of fans is incredibly fulfilling.

I’m so hyped for this movie! Ryan Gosling has said his character is the bravest he’s ever played, which really gets me excited for an epic adventure in that galaxy far, far away. And the cast is incredible! Not only is Gosling starring, but they’ve brought in huge names like Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, and Matt Smith – it’s a seriously star-studded lineup, which is a little different for this franchise since they usually focus on up-and-coming actors. I can’t wait!
With over a year until its release, there’s still a lot of work happening on Starfighter to finalize the story and bring director Levy’s vision to life. Despite this, excitement is building for the film, as fans are expecting exciting action sequences and impressive lightsaber duels – including one reportedly featuring Tom Cruise – and are eager to see how it will expand the Star Wars galaxy.
Star Wars: Starfighter will debut in theaters on May 28, 2027.
