Fugitive kangaroo leads caretakers on 3-day hunt before returning home

I couldn’t believe it when I heard the news! Apparently, on March 25th, 2026, Chesney, one of the kangaroos at Sunshine Farm petting zoo in Necedah, Wisconsin, got really scared and hopped right out of his enclosure and into the woods. It was quite a scene, I’m sure!

Shortly after Chesney went missing, the petting zoo reached out to nearby residents and the community for help, reporting they had last seen him walking in the direction of Seventh Avenue.

Trying to find the kangaroo with a drone didn’t work because of the bad weather. Later that night, Chesney was seen, but search teams quickly lost track of him in the dense woods.

Thermal drones help locate Chesney

The search team looked through the night and then met up early the next morning. Instead of actively looking, they went back to the last place he was seen with his favorite food and a familiar-smelling pouch, hoping to lure him out.

By Friday, as the search continued, the local community really got behind the adorable animal that had become a local celebrity, and the zoo owner spent their time giving interviews and tracking where the animal was spotted.

There was a moment of excitement that afternoon when Chesney was seen near 23rd and 9th streets. The owner cautiously approached, getting within just a few feet of the kangaroo, but it quickly ran off towards the river.

Afraid of losing him a second time, a team launched several heat-sensing drones into the night sky. The drones located Chesney using his body heat, even in the complete darkness, and helped an eight-person team find and surround him.

In a thrilling finish late at night, a rescuer jumped onto the kangaroo, but the baby kangaroo wriggled free, continuing the pursuit.

After a remarkable rescue by a staff member named Stacy, who the tired team called a “rockstar,” Chesney was finally brought home safe and sound to sleep in his own bed the next day.

Okay, so good news – my character, Chesney, made it back to base without a scratch! But things weren’t so smooth for Sheila the kangaroo. She broke out of wherever she was being held back in 2025, and it was a whole thing.
