Julie Bowen Calls Out Press for Inventing a Rivalry With Sofia Vergara on ‘Modern Family’ Set: They ‘Pit Us Against Each Other Like We Hated Each Other’

As a long-time cinema enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless Hollywood narratives, I must say that Julie Bowen’s recent revelation about her relationship with Sofia Vergara during their tenure on “Modern Family” resonates deeply with me. It’s disheartening to see how the media often creates unnecessary rivalries between talented women, fostering a toxic environment of competition rather than collaboration.

In a recent chat on the “90210MG” podcast, I, Julie Bowen, stood up and spoke out against the media for constantly trying to pit Sofia Vergara and me during our time on “Modern Family.” We were both integral parts of the ABC sitcom throughout its 11-season journey from 2009 to 2020. I was fortunate enough to bring home two Emmys for my role as Claire Dunphy in the comedy series, thanks to the audience’s appreciation and love for my performance.

“Bowen commented that during their time on ‘Modern Family,’ the media tried to portray an unspoken rivalry between her and Sofia, similar to Betty and Veronica from Archie Comics. According to Bowen, the press were insistent on creating a feud between us, implying we didn’t get along.”

Bowen stated, “There’s a limiting belief that only one woman can be content at once.” He then shared, “I was taken aback, as I adore Sofía. I appreciate our differences – she is witty, humble, bold, and full of life, and she enjoys dancing, indulging in cake, and so many other things.”

In response to attempts by the media to create a divisive narrative between them, Bowen expressed that she was actually gaining a tremendous amount of insight from being near Vergara on the “Modern Family” set about what it means to be a truly empowered and authentic woman. She found it unfortunate and misguided of the press to continue this narrative, as she herself never contributed to such speculation.

“Bowen often found herself astonished and amused; it seemed so preposterous when she came across tabloid stories suggesting a rivalry between her and Vergara,” is one possible way to paraphrase that sentence while maintaining its original meaning and readability. This version uses more formal language, but still conveys the same idea in an easy-to-understand manner.

In a recent feature article gracing the cover of EbMaster, Vergara disclosed that Bowen had sent her a video showing herself casting a vote for Vergara in this year’s Emmys, given Vergara’s nomination for her role in “Griselda.” This act has left many wondering why Vergara hasn’t yet won an Emmy for her portrayal of Gloria on “Modern Family,” a topic that Vergara often humorously addresses with Bowen.

“To Julie Bowen, Sophia Vergara jokingly remarked, ‘Four times I’ve been nominated, while she was only three. But I like to remind her, ‘One of those nominations belongs to me, and I’m temporarily lending it to your home.”’
