As a cinephile with decades of film industry experience under my belt, I find the story of Joel Souza and Rust quite poignant and heart-wrenching. The tragic shooting of Halyna Hutchins has left an indelible mark on this production, and it’s inspiring to see how the director is handling such a difficult situation with grace and responsibility.
In my own words, I’ve shared how I resumed directing the film after the tragic shooting incident that took Halyna Hutchins’ life on set. During my initial interview following the 2021 event with Vanity Fair, I explained the sequence of events leading up to my return. “At a certain juncture, it was communicated to me that there would be some form of settlement and Matt Hutchins, Halyna’s husband, would be participating as a producer,” I recalled. “This was what he desired. I understood that completing the movie would financially support Halyna’s family, which is crucial to me.” Moreover, I felt a sense of personal obligation towards the project itself. “The fact that people can see her last work is significant,” I stated. “If it had been me who perished instead of her—as it should have been—she would have done the same thing.”
In the filming of a particular scene involving a loaded gun, Hutchins was tragically shot while star Alec Baldwin was acting. The armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and given an 18-month prison sentence. However, the involuntary-manslaughter trial against Baldwin was dropped on July 12 due to withheld evidence. It’s worth mentioning that some parts of Hutchins’ work will remain unseen by the public, even after the movie’s release. For instance, actor Jensen Ackles decided not to return to the project and was replaced by Josh Hopkins. As a result, any scenes involving Hutchins and Ackles are no longer part of the film. This also includes the scene where the shooting occurred, along with certain events leading up to it, as stated by director Souza. He has since expressed his unwillingness to revisit those moments.
