Seeing The Avengers today, in 2026, is quite different than when it first came out in 2012. Even though it was a huge, groundbreaking team-up movie back then, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown so much since, making the film feel even more impressive as part of the larger story.
Because of the way Marvel movies build on each other and constantly add to the overall story, I think the first Avengers film has actually become more meaningful over time. Watching it again recently reminded me of a key theme that was present in the MCU before Avengers: Doomsday.
The Avengers’ Battle Of New York Is So Much Bigger Than It Was 14 Years Ago
In 2012, The Avengers and the Battle of New York marked a major turning point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was the first time audiences saw a large-scale alien invasion of Earth, and the first time the newly formed team of superheroes worked together publicly. The film really delivered on everything Marvel Studios had been building towards in its first set of movies.
The Battle of New York has grown significantly in importance, especially when you consider how it’s impacted the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. New details and connections revealed in recent movies and shows have expanded its scope and changed our understanding of the timeline and overall story.
Years later, we learn that a young Kate Bishop actually saw the Battle of New York. Watching Clint Barton, the hero known as Hawkeye, in action deeply inspired her, as shown in the 2021 series Hawkeye.
Dealing with the alien technology left behind after the battle also led to the formation of the Department of Damage Control, and even created some of Spider-Man’s enemies, like Vulture, Shocker, and the Tinkerer (as seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming). Meanwhile, the company responsible for much of the city’s rebuilding, Union Allied, was discovered to be a cover for Wilson Fisk’s criminal activities in Hell’s Kitchen during the first season of the Daredevil Netflix series.
Knowing that Phil Coulson was brought back to life with Kree blood in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. completely changes how it feels to watch his death scene in The Avengers. It carries a lot more emotional impact now that we know he wasn’t truly gone.
Then there’s Avengers: Endgame from 2019, where the Avengers’ time travel mission drastically alters the established timeline. This creates alternate realities, like the one shown in the Loki series, where Loki gets away with the Space Stone after the Battle of New York and is later captured by the TVA – quite a chaotic turn of events for that version of Loki!
In addition to everything else, Captain America battled an earlier version of himself to secure the Mind Stone. The movie Endgame also revealed that the Ancient One used the Time Stone to defend New York’s Sanctum Sanctorum during the Chitauri attack.
Looking back at the first Avengers movie, it’s easy to see how it launched many of the ideas and storylines we saw develop throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A great example of this is the dynamic between Captain America and Iron Man, whose initial disagreements were ultimately proven wrong by each other in Avengers: Endgame (2019).
Steve Rogers didn’t think Tony Stark was the type to make a selfless sacrifice, but Iron Man ultimately gave everything to save the universe with the Infinity Stones. Similarly, Rogers showed he was more than just a product of the Super Soldier Serum when he wielded Mjolnir and battled Thanos.
It’s clear that The Avengers from 2012 holds up incredibly well. It’s still a really enjoyable movie with fantastic characters and exciting action. Plus, because the Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded so much since then, rewatching it feels richer and more rewarding, especially for longtime fans.
I Just Realized The Avengers’ Most Genius Scene (Ahead Of Avengers: Doomsday)
With the new movie, Avengers: Doomsday, coming out later this year, many people are discussing whether the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still as good as it was during the Infinity Saga.
Marvel Studios has gone through significant changes and shifted its approach, meaning there’s been less clear preparation for the next big team-up movie compared to the years 2008-2019. That’s why the post-credits scene in the first Avengers movie felt especially impactful when I recently rewatched it.
In the closing moments of the movie The Avengers, after the team disbands, Maria Hill wonders what will happen if a new, large-scale threat emerges. SHIELD Director Nick Fury responds with a straightforward answer: “They’ll return… because we’ll require their help.”
No matter how much preparation the Marvel Cinematic Universe does (or doesn’t do) beforehand, Nick Fury’s message essentially guarantees one thing: when a new crisis hits, the Avengers will always be there to respond. In this huge, connected movie world, you can count on their return.
The recent Multiverse Saga has done a good job of laying the foundation for a new team of Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Upcoming Marvel movies like Captain America: Brave New World (2025) and Thunderbolts are setting the stage for a larger story. These films suggest the need for a new team of heroes as we head toward major events like Doomsday this year and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
It’s true that Doctor Doom’s arrival hasn’t been heavily foreshadowed, beyond his quick appearance at the end of Fantastic Four: First Steps, and we don’t yet know why Robert Downey Jr. is playing him. However, that doesn’t really matter because, like the first big Avengers team-up, the core idea is simple: the Avengers will come together when a major threat arises and they’re needed.
You know, thinking back to the first Avengers movie, Fury’s little speech really set things up perfectly for everything that came after. It’s actually pretty cool to remember that now, especially as we’re getting hyped for Doomsday in December. It’s reassuring, honestly, and makes me even more excited for what’s next!
