While there used to be a huge wave of high fantasy anime coming from Japan each season – with many new shows premiering – that flow has slowed down recently. But new sales figures suggest that the popularity of “isekai” anime – stories where characters are transported to another world – isn’t likely to fade anytime soon.
TO Books, a Japanese publisher of light novels and comics, has reported surprisingly strong sales over the past eleven months. As a result, they’ve officially raised their earnings expectations for the year, which concludes in April 2026.
Isekai’s Anime Boom Continues to Accelerate in 2026 Despite Market Saturation
TO Books found that releasing anime versions of isekai light novels, like The Water Magician and A Gentle Noble’s Vacation Recommendation, helped boost overall sales. This shows the genre remains popular in Japan, even as its international appeal fluctuates.
Unlike traditional fantasy stories, isekai usually centers around an ordinary or unlucky character who is transported to a new world, often after dying. This new beginning frequently involves them being reborn as a different species, allowing them to live a completely changed life. What’s unique about isekai is that the main character doesn’t necessarily have to be a hero.
TO Books has significantly revised its financial projections upward. The company now anticipates that sales, operating profit, ordinary profit, and net profit will all be higher than previously expected. According to Automaton Media, total sales are now forecast to increase from 11 billion yen to 11.3 billion yen.
We’re forecasting around 6.0% growth overall for the next fiscal year. Ordinary profit is expected to see the biggest jump, increasing from a previous forecast of 1.67 billion yen to 1.87 billion yen – a rise of approximately 35.5%.
Reincarnated as a Slime & Ascendance of a Bookworm Return for Spring 2026 Season
TO Books is a popular publisher known for its large selection of fantasy and isekai novels. Two of their most well-known titles are The Ascendance of a Bookworm and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Both of these series have become popular anime, produced by the studios Wit Studio and 8bit.

Other bookstores in Japan have also noticed how popular isekai stories have become. The owner of Comic C’moa, a large digital ebook retailer, recently said isekai is their top-selling genre for both men and women. This current trend seems to support a forecast made in 2024 by Akira Kanai, the editor-in-chief of Kodansha’s Monthly Afternoon magazine.
He predicted the genre would be particularly popular with male readers for the next five years. However, isekai has surprisingly become popular with both men and women, which will likely encourage anime studios to look for new stories that can attract a wider audience.
