A Florida man, 58, bypassed airport security by driving through a fence and onto the runway. He then attempted to hijack multiple planes, claiming he just wanted to travel 300 miles to see his sister.
On March 25th, Bryan John Parker drove his blue Ford Mustang through a fence at Daytona Beach International Airport and then ran onto the taxiway where he urinated.
According to an FBI document, Parker ran after planes as they were moving on the ground with their propellers spinning. He also reportedly climbed into two empty small planes and then opened the door of one while the engine was running, urging the pilot to take off immediately.
Police bodycam footage reveals motive
Parker was stopped by security at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the flight school near Daytona Beach. Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies then arrived and placed him under arrest.
According to body camera footage released by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, Bryan John Parker told the officer he couldn’t remember exactly what started the incident. He did say he’d attended an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting earlier that day, and then, as far as he could recall, he quickly found himself using cocaine, drinking alcohol, and smoking marijuana.
The FBI affidavit states that Parker told investigators he planned to fly to Sanibel, Florida – over 300 miles away – claiming he wanted to visit his sister.
Parker is being held at the Volusia County Jail and is accused of several crimes. These include trying to hijack an aircraft, breaking into a vehicle, illegally entering airport property, and indecent exposure. He faces multiple charges in total.
