The trail has not run cold at Netflix.
Netflix has a growing lineup of shows planned for 2026, covering many different genres. Crime series, however, are particularly popular with viewers. Early this year, both His & Hers, starring Jon Bernthal, and the series based on Harlan Coben’s Run Away quickly became top hits on the streaming platform.
I’m really excited about the new Netflix series, Detective Hole! Like a lot of my favorite shows on the platform, such as Bridgerton, it’s based on a hugely popular book – Joe Nesbø’s novel, in this case. It seems Netflix knows what works, and it’s great to see another book adaptation becoming a global hit. Plus, it’s a dark crime series, just like another show I’m following, and both are planned as single seasons, which is a nice change of pace.
According to data from FlixPatrol, Joe Nesbø’s Detective Hole is now the second most popular TV show on Netflix globally. It’s quickly gained traction, surpassing other popular series like Virgin River, Homicide, and the new thriller Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen (from the creators of Stranger Things). The series premiered on Netflix on March 26th.
Wow, just a day after hitting Netflix, Joe Nesbø’s Detective Hole is already climbing the charts to become one of their biggest hits of 2026! I’m seeing it right up there with the juggernaut that is One Piece – it’s only being beaten by the return of that live-action series right now. Seriously, this 9-part thriller is making waves, and it’s clear audiences are hooked.
The Netflix series Detective Hole is adapted from Jo Nesbø’s popular Harry Hole books. The first season covers the plot of the fifth book, The Devil’s Star. Jo Nesbø is also the showrunner, meaning he’s heavily involved in overseeing the series to stay true to his original stories. This is a significant departure from the 2017 film The Snowman, which starred Michael Fassbender.
The 2017 film The Snowman, based on Jo Nesbø’s seventh Harry Hole novel, wasn’t written by Nesbø himself and was a box office failure, earning only $43.1 million despite a $35 million budget. It received very poor reviews, with a 7% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the new Netflix series, Joe Nesbø’s Detective Hole, which benefits from the author’s direct involvement, launched to overwhelmingly positive reviews, achieving a perfect 100% critics’ score.
Tobias Santelmann, known for his role in The Last Kingdom, stars as Harry Hole in this Netflix thriller. Joel Kinnaman (The Suicide Squad) plays Tom Waaler, a fellow detective who is also corrupt, adding to Hole’s challenges as he hunts a serial killer. Currently, the Norwegian series is the sixth most popular show on Netflix in the U.S. A second season of Detective Hole hasn’t been confirmed yet.
