I have to say, Steve Zahn is absolutely phenomenal in “She Dances.” It’s a really sweet and funny movie about a father and daughter, and honestly, it feels incredibly genuine. It’s inspired by Zahn’s own life – he’s a ‘dance dad’ in real life to his daughter Audrey, and she’s fantastic in her first movie role! You can really feel the love they have for each other, and it just makes the whole film that much more special.
Rick Gomez makes his directorial debut with “She Dances,” a film he co-wrote with Steve Zahn. The story follows a father and daughter who reconnect on an unplanned road trip – a familiar storyline, but Gomez and Zahn bring a fresh perspective that makes the film special. While the basic idea isn’t groundbreaking, their approach is what truly stands out.
Steve Zahn stars as Jason Phillips, a man living apart from his wife, Deb (Rosemarie DeWitt), and daughter, Claire (Audrey Zahn). Their separation stems from a deeply sad event that’s gradually revealed. Ultimately, the story is about three vulnerable people each coping with hardship in their own way. Jason, in particular, has withdrawn from everyone, which is making things even harder.
Claire has been dancing her whole life, and now, as a high school senior, she’s ready for her last competition. However, the rules require a parent or guardian to accompany her, and her mom is unable to go. Claire hesitantly asks her dad to fill in, and he reluctantly agrees. This sets the stage for a trip where they’ll be forced to confront the difficult issues between them.
“She Dances” is a funny film about a dad, Jason, who tries his best to support his daughter’s dance journey, even though he’s a bit clumsy about it. While it occasionally tries too hard to be humorous, the movie generally strikes a good balance between heartwarming moments and genuine laughs. It avoids being overly ridiculous or sentimental, and stays grounded thanks to the believable and natural connection between the actors playing father and daughter.
The movie benefits from a strong supporting cast, with each actor adding depth to the narrative. Mackenzie Ziegler is delightful as Claire’s best friend, Kat, who proves to be more than just a source of humor. Sonequa Martin-Green shines in several scenes as Jamie, the dance instructor and mentor to Claire and Kat. And Ethan Hawke brings his signature charm to the role of Jason’s kind and supportive best friend and business partner, even in a smaller part.
“She Dances” is a reliably funny and touching film about family. It’s full of surprises, especially when it explores more serious ideas. Veteran actor Zahn gives a standout performance, drawing on personal experiences, while his daughter makes an impressive first appearance on the big screen, skillfully avoiding common pitfalls. She’s a true discovery, and I can’t wait to see what she does with her career.
