Joaquin Phoenix Quits Movie 5 Days Before Filming, Report Details "Huge Amount Of Outrage"

As a longtime fan of Joaquin Phoenix and his captivating performances, I must admit this recent turn of events leaves me both bewildered and intrigued. It seems that the enigmatic actor has once again found himself at the center of a Hollywood drama, albeit one that’s more reminiscent of a soap opera than a blockbuster film.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve had to back out from my upcoming role in a highly anticipated movie project, only five days before we were supposed to start rolling. There’s been some chatter suggesting that it was a case of me getting a bit jittery, but that’s just speculation for now.

According to Variety, the actor Phoenix has departed from a yet-untitled gay romance movie directed by Todd Haynes (known for I’m Not There and Carol). Phoenix played an active role in the film’s creation, collaborating with Haynes and Jon Raymond on the screenplay. Construction of full sets was already underway in Guadalajara, Mexico, and the film had been successfully sold to distributors.

The report states that the film is currently facing a critical situation, and it seems that Joker actor Phoenix’s role can no longer be replaced. Everyone involved, including the crew and investors, are yet to receive their payments, and there’s a possibility that the movie’s financial losses could reach tens of thousands of dollars. Variety hinted at Phoenix possibly having second thoughts, but the exact reason remains unclear at this time.

On August 14th, The Hollywood Reporter released an article discussing the backlash that ensued. An unnamed studio executive quoted in the piece stated that there had been a significant amount of anger over the Phoenix predicament. Notably, it was actually Phoenix who initially presented the film to Haynes.

The article indicates that Phoenix may be subject to legal repercussions due to his apparent withdrawal before the project’s commencement, although the specifics of why he backed out remain unclear.

As a diehard fan, I can tell you that it’s well-known among us that Phoenix allegedly took a stand in the production of Napoleon directed by Ridley Scott. The story goes that he threatened to walk away from the project unless Paul Thomas Anderson was brought on board to handle the rewrites.

According to reports, certain producers have casually discussed boycotting Phoenix following Haynes’ exit, but many admit this isn’t practical, especially considering that Joker 2 is anticipated to be successful, as stated by The Hollywood Reporter.

A different person, unconnected to the Phoenix/Haynes predicament, stated that it’s unlikely that Phoenix will face significant repercussions for quitting the movie. However, this individual anticipates that Phoenix may have to pay a sum in the millions (low-seven figures) as compensation for his unexpected departure from the film.

“As long as they threaten, he’ll settle. It’s nothing to him,” this person said.

In a recent announcement, it’s been revealed that Danny Ramirez, from Top Gun: Maverick, will join as a co-star for an upcoming film. This movie is not your typical romance – it’s a love story between two men, set in the 1930s. The director, Haynes, has expressed his intention to give this film an NC-17 rating and include graphic sexual content to reflect the story accurately.

Independently, Deadline stated that Phoenix left the filming location in late July. Additionally, the article hinted at Ramirez’s travel to San Diego for Comic-Con, unsure whether the Haynes film would truly materialize.

On more than one occasion, a film starring Phoenix has been halted at the last minute before shooting was scheduled to begin. Specifically, in 2023, the production of the independent movie “The Island” – featuring Phoenix and Rooney Mara – had to be postponed on the brink of filming due to complications related to its insurance policy.

In the upcoming DC movie “Joker: Folie a Deux,” the sequel to the 2019 film where he earned an Oscar, Joaquin Phoenix will once again make an appearance. Additionally, Phoenix has been confirmed for the role in Ari Aster’s latest project titled “Eddington.”
