McDonald’s gacha game turns Happy Meal toys into virtual collectibles

A developer created an online game where you can collect virtual McDonald’s Happy Meal toys. The game lets you randomly ‘pull’ for collectibles, featuring toys released over the past 20 years.

I was so excited when Mike Wing announced his incredible project on March 26th! He basically collected every Happy Meal toy McDonald’s has put out for the past 20 years and made a website where you can browse and ‘collect’ them all digitally. It’s seriously amazing!

McDonald’s offers a huge collection of Happy Meal toys, and you can get them through a digital, chance-based system. You can get one to three random toys with a regular Happy Meal. For a rarer experience, there’s a ‘Golden Meal’ – appearing about once in every 30 orders – that gives you a larger haul of six to ten toys.

I gathered every toy released with McDonald’s Happy Meals over the past two decades and created a website to showcase the entire collection.

20 years of Happy Meals toys at your fingertips

It’s not just about getting random items. Users can grow their collection and trade duplicates for new rewards, adding a sense of progress to the browser app that goes beyond simply opening packs.

This website lets you explore McDonald’s merchandise from years past. It features digital versions of Happy Meal toys that you can collect, similar to how other online games collect characters or cards. The site also mentions that some of the toy images might not be high quality because they’re based on older materials.

This is a great example of small internet projects finding creative ways to use large collections of information. Recently, Wikigacha became popular by turning Wikipedia articles into collectible cards, similar to Pokemon, where users could randomly ‘draw’ cards, build collections, and even battle each other.
