More than two and a half decades back, Vince Vaughn initially crossed paths with Bill Lawrence. So, when the chance for a cop comedy titled “Bad Monkey” presented itself, Vince eagerly seized the moment to collaborate with him for the first time.
Vaughn shared that there was a lot of laughter during their collaboration at the Apple TV+ show’s premiere on Monday night. Regarding working with the successful creator behind both “Spin City” and “Ted Lasso”, Vaughn commented, “He’s full of great ideas, he encourages ideas, and it was effortless.”
It’s not unexpected that things turned out favorably for Lawrence, given his tendency to collaborate often with friends and relatives. In his current professional phase, he finds it incredibly enjoyable to team up with those he enjoys spending time with, as expressed when his daughter, singer-songwriter Charlotte Lawrence, strolled past him on the sandy-hued carpet outside the Hammer Museum in Westwood.
At first, Lawrence felt a bit uneasy about selecting her for the series, yet he recognized that she possessed the necessary talent.
He shared, “She’s incredibly self-assured and I initially got nervous, thinking ‘If I place her in that situation…'” He continued. “Managing social media is difficult; it requires careful navigation. Yet, she’s dealt with such situations frequently and genuinely. Honestly, she excelled. She was fantastic. I’d take the risk again. Here’s my advice: if you ever reach a point in your career where you can employ loved ones, don’t hesitate to do so.”
As a devoted movie enthusiast reminiscing about my latest creative journey, I can’t help but share an exciting update: I had the pleasure of reconnecting with my former “Scrubs” co-star, the talented Zach Braff, for our new series. The moment I proposed the idea to him – a twist on our old roles, darker and more graphically intense – he was game! I remember feeling so isolated in Florida, and having him back felt like a breath of fresh air.

The Apple TV+ series is adapted from Carl Hiaasen’s novel with the same title, which caught Vaughn’s attention due to its unique style. “I was searching for something with vibrant characters, unexpected plot developments, and people going through extraordinary events,” he shared. In simpler terms, he was seeking a show with a fun vibe, exciting twists, and captivating adventures.
Actress Natalie Martinez, who portrays Yancy’s previous work partner at the police station, joined the production as she has long admired Vaughn. She expressed, “He’s undoubtedly one of our contemporary legends in this field. His talent is simply incredible. It’s a real privilege to be working alongside him.”
The position offered a thrilling chance for her to highlight her Cuban-American background and deep connections with South Florida.
As a movie reviewer, I can wholeheartedly say that in this role, Martinez found an opportunity to embrace and express aspects of himself that he typically needs to conceal or alter for other parts. It was truly refreshing to see him play a character so aligned with his personal experiences and cultural background. Being deeply connected to Cuban culture myself, yet not born there, I resonate with Martinez’s sentiments – we both yearn for representation and a voice that reflects our unique perspectives.
