As a lifelong cinephile with a soft spot for both classic cinema and emerging talents, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming fall season at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures! The lineup promises an exciting journey through the rich tapestry of film history, from the legendary Godzilla to the iconic Rita Moreno.
For the autumn season of 2024, the Academy Museum of Cinematic Arts is revealing its schedule of movie collections, open events, and learning initiatives.
Key points of our autumn lineup feature:
The Academy Museum is set to introduce two fresh exhibitions during the autumn season. “Color in Motion: A Journey through Cinematic Chroma” delves into how color is employed in filmmaking, while “Cyberpunk: Predicting Tomorrows Through Film” examines the cyberpunk subgenre of sci-fi cinema. Both exhibitions open to visitors on October 6th.
“This autumn, we’ve carefully selected a series of events that offer viewers an opportunity to interact with iconic films and their creators, including Godzilla and Rita Moreno. From the technical aspects behind these movies to the stars themselves, this season invites you to explore the magic that brings them to life on our screens,” said Amy Homma, director and president of the Academy Museum. “Don’t miss out on Color in Motion and Cyberpunk, along with their additional programming, and join us this season to discover the latest innovations and celebrate classic cinema.”
Submissions Open for 34th Annual Gotham Awards
The Gotham Film and Media Institute recently unveiled that they’re accepting entries for their 34th annual Gotham Awards. Notably, two new categories – ‘Best Director’ and ‘Breakthrough Performer’ – have been introduced this year, making these nominees eligible for awards.
The deadline for submissions is set for September 19, 2024, across nine different competition categories: Best Feature, Best Documentary Feature, Best International Feature, Best Director, Emerging Director (Breakthrough Director), Best Screenplay, Outstanding Lead Performance, Outstanding Supporting Performance, and Breakthrough Performer. The television categories will be honored at the Gotham TV Awards in 2025.
“Jeffrey Sharp, head of The Gotham Film & Media Institute, announced that we’re extending our celebration of remarkable skill this year,” he stated. “For the very first time, we will present the Gotham Award for Best Director. This honor recognizes a filmmaker whose fictional work, whether domestic or foreign, showcases groundbreaking creativity and presents an original perspective. This fresh award serves to enhance our existing Breakthrough Director Award, which has long been presented to emerging directorial talent.”
The nominations are set for announcement on October 29th, followed by the awards ceremony taking place in New York City on December 2nd, 2024.
